Hospital Companion – On-Call, Nights, Part Time

The Adrian Dominican Sisters are seeking an on-call Hospital Companion to join our Spiritual and Social Care Services team who provide support services to the Sisters in the Dominican Life Center, which is a Continuum of Care Retirement Community located on the Mother house campus in Adrian, Michigan.

What you will do in this role:
The Hospital Companion provides supportive companionship and non-medical assistance to patients in a hospital setting and/or facility setting. The companion is on call from 5:00pm to 8:30am, Monday through Sunday to respond to emergency room/hospital visits. This entry-level position requires strong communication skills, the ability to handle challenging behaviors with patience and professionalism, and the ability to maintain appropriate boundaries.

The Companion communicates with the staff on campus as necessary. Fleet vehicles are provided.

Hours:

On call, every week, Mon. – Sun., 5:00pm - 8:30am. Requires on-call availability and some weekend and holiday work.

Pay: 250.00 weekly flat rate for on call weeks plus additional $16.92 hourly rate for all hours worked when called in or on campus.

Responsibilities:

  • Escorts Sisters to Emergency Room or meets the ambulance there to provide supportive companionship during ER stay or return home using a congregational vehicle.
  • Provide companionship and comfort as directed for Sisters admitted to the hospital during their stay.
  • Driving vehicles during the day and night in all weather conditions
  • Accompanies Sisters who are transferred from one ER or hospital to another.
  • Communicates professionally and appropriately with ADS staff via phone or text regarding Sisters' conditions.
  • Assist with non-medical tasks within the facility including, but not limited to: meal assistance, light errands, escorting patients from place to place, or providing companionship.
  • Maintain professional boundaries while fostering a supportive environment.
  • Respond calmly and appropriately to patients exhibiting challenging behaviors.

Qualifications:

Education:

High School Diploma

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Well developed communication and listening skills.
  • Experience with, and ability to be present, supportive and compassionate to all Sisters, especially those living with dementia and memory loss
  • Emotionally and spiritually mature
  • Must be able to exercise patience and empathy.
  • Must be comfortable in a medical setting and experience with medical terminology is preferred.
  • Must have a valid driver's license, good driving record and be able to drive when necessary in all weather conditions and at night.
  • Must pass a third party driving test every two years
  • Ability to handle behavioral challenges with patience and professionalism.
  • Ability to maintain clear and appropriate boundaries with Sisters.
  • Prior experience in caregiving, customer service, or a healthcare setting is a plus but not required.

Physical

Qualifications:

  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time
  • Be able to assist Sisters in and out of vehicles and buildings as necessary
  • Be sighted and able to hear well.
  • Be able to lift as least 45 pounds.
  • Annual influenza vaccination is required for this position.
  • Must be able to respond to a call and arrive on the ADS campus within 60 minutes
