Sumter County is Currently Seeking a Head of Children’s Services for the Sumter County Library

Position Summary

The Head of Children’s Services leads library services and programs for children and teens under the general direction of the Library Director. This position supervises staff and volunteers, develops engaging programs, and builds community partnerships that support reading, learning, and library participation throughout the library system.

  • Plans, promotes, and delivers programs for children and teens, including story times, reading promotions, special exhibits, and displays.
  • Organizes and administers the annual Summer Reading Program, including sponsor outreach, promotional materials, activities, and staff coordination.
  • Supervises and trains Children’s Services staff and volunteers.
  • Assists patrons with locating library resources and using computers; conducts library tours and accurately reshelves materials.
  • Coordinates off-site outreach and collaborates with community organizations that support the library’s mission and goals.
  • Researches grants for library services and programs and compiles departmental statistics.
  • Performs opening, closing, and safety procedures and follows library policies.
  • Participates in relevant committees and organizations and performs related duties as assigned.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association (ALA)-accredited library school, undergraduate degree from an accredited university, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for and successful experience working with children and teens.

Additional Requirement: Driver’s license valid in the State of South Carolina.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Comprehensive knowledge of children’s literature and library services for children and teens.
  • Ability to develop innovative programs, establish objectives, and evaluate results.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and public speaking skills.
  • Proficiency with technology and ability to assist patrons with computer use.
  • Ability to work independently, collaborate with a team, and organize programs and activities.
  • Ability to use tact, courtesy, and sound judgment when working with coworkers and the public.
Physical Requirements

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and push book carts weighing more than 100 pounds.

Work Environment

Work takes place in library settings and at off-site community locations, with frequent interaction with children, teens, families, and the public. The schedule includes daytime, evening, and weekend hours.
