Glass Melter Design Engineer at AGY
Position OverviewWe are seeking a talented Mechanical Engineer, preferably with a master's degree, to join our Research and Development team. This role focuses on the design and optimization of very high‑temperature resistant metal components and supporting equipment used for glass melting and fiberizing processes. Experience in quartz melting and related processes is highly desirable.
Key Responsibilities- Component Design:
- Design precious metal parts for high‑temperature glass melting, conditioning, and fiber formation using advanced design tools.
- Create supporting hardware and equipment for glass melting and fiberizing processes.
- Optimization:
- Optimize parts for various glass chemistries, properties, and forming characteristics to enhance productivity and minimize material usage.
- Evaluate and refine designs using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software (e.g., COMSOL).
- Hands‑On Evaluation:
- Conduct hands‑on testing of new designs in production environments through designed experiments.
- Analyze production data and compare the performance of new designs against current standards.
- Collaboration and Process Understanding:
- Work closely with other engineers to address glass quality issues.
- Understand and optimize related processes impacting productivity, including:
- Various glass properties
- Batch delivery systems
- Melting and conditioning quality
- Fiber quenching
- Chemical size application
- Contact points and winding processes
- Mechanical Engineering degree (Master's degree preferred) with specialization or advanced coursework in Heat Transfer and Fluid Dynamics.
- Experience or familiarity with melting quartz and related processes is strongly preferred.
- Proficiency in designing and optimizing mechanical systems for high‑performance applications.
- Experience with FEA tools (e.g., COMSOL) for evaluating and enhancing designs.
- Strong analytical skills and hands‑on experience in a production or experimental environment.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills.
