Fortis Alberta is seeking a proactive and customer-focused Construction Planner to help bring electrical infrastructure projects from design to construction!
In this role, you will work closely with Project Planners, construction crews, customers, and regional operations teams to ensure projects are safe, construction-ready, and delivered efficiently.
Combining technical expertise, field work, stakeholder engagement, and problem-solving, you will play a key role in supporting the timely delivery of projects that power Alberta communities.
Key Responsibilities:- Review project designs, identify field conflicts, and confirm required approvals and documentation are in place prior to construction.
- Conduct site visits to finalize alignments, field-fit designs, complete staking activities, and assess project constructability.
- Expedite Direct to Construction projects by applying engineering templates and identifying opportunities to improve project timelines.
- Partner with Project Planners, Field Schedulers, Area Coordinators, Operations Leads, and Crew Leads to efficiently transition projects into construction.
- Provide technical expertise on overhead and underground distribution systems and assess impacts to customer and utility facilities.
- Communicate with customers, stakeholders, and consultants to confirm requirements, provide guidance, and resolve concerns.
- Complete site readiness activities, including risk and hazard assessments, utility locates, access planning, outage requirements, and construction readiness reviews.
- Coordinate landowner, environmental, vegetation management, and third-party contractor requirements to ensure projects are construction-ready.
- Verify project scope, site conditions, and field data accuracy to support efficient construction execution.
- Apply utility standards, engineering policies, and regulatory requirements to ensure safe and compliant project delivery.
- Electrical Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, or Geomatics Engineering Technology diploma with a minimum of three years of field experience; or a Journeyman Power Line Technician certificate with at least two years of construction experience.
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence.
- Strong knowledge of utility construction practices, electrical distribution systems, and construction planning principles.
- Proven ability to interpret technical information and communicate effectively with customers, contractors, consultants, and stakeholders.
- Strong customer service, relationship-building, and collaboration skills.
- Demonstrated problem-solving abilities with sound judgment and the ability to evaluate field conditions and construction requirements.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and mobile or field-based technology applications.
- Knowledge of utility regulations, project management principles, surveying practices, and estimating or design software is considered an asset.
- Previous experience in a Lead Power Line Technician, Area Coordinator, or Area Foreman role is considered an asset.

Full Time, Permanent - Schedule:
Monday - Friday - Based in Drayton Valley, Alberta
- Some travel, including overnight stays, is required (10 - 15%)
- Safety-sensitive position requiring pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.
- Additional trade certifications, certificates, diplomas, or degrees in a related discipline are considered assets.
