Job Summary

The Counselor AOD II - MC provides alcohol and drug treatment services to clients and their families, engages in the treatment plan process with the therapist and case manager, and maintains ongoing clinical documentation to support whole-person care. This position reports to the Program Manager and the Clinical Director, who supervise the duties and performance.

Responsibilities
  • As part of a multidisciplinary Case Management team, perform primary alcohol and drug counseling functions including screening, assessment, and intake.
    • Provide one-on-one mentoring and support to clients.
    • Teach clients independent living and problem-solving skills; develop, plan, and initiate methods of exposing clients to healthy lifestyle activities designed to alter former lifestyles and negative behavioral patterns.
    • Advocate for clients before outside social service and legal organizations.
  • Collaborate with Case Manager and therapist to ensure critical linkages to support services meeting medical, mental health, housing, and education needs of the participant are delivered effectively.
    • As part of the Case Management Team, conduct crisis intervention.
    • Lead or coordinate group, individual, and educational sessions.
    • Coordinate treatment services with members of the multidisciplinary Case Management team.
    • Conduct discharge and transition planning; draft discharge summaries.
  • Meet regularly with supervisor and multidisciplinary Case Management Team to ensure implementation of prescribed treatment protocol and client progress in the treatment/case plan.
    • Attend and participate in scheduled supervision meetings with the assigned supervisor.
    • Attend and participate in shift exchange meetings, case conferences, staff meetings, and other treatment team meetings as needed.
  • Ensure timely and accurate records are maintained, including hard copy and electronic health records, documenting all treatments and client progress, including self-administration of prescribed medication.
    • Monitor self-administration of medication and drug screens as required.
    • Ensure records comply with HIPAA and applicable state and federal laws and policy/procedure.
    • Prepare reports as required by funders.
  • Adhere to professional standards of care and conduct as required by licensure/certification and policy, including ongoing professional education and organizational training as needed.
  • Transport program participants to scheduled appointments, events, and meetings as required.
  • Assist with program and outreach events as needed.
  • Participate in telephone hotline coverage as trained.
  • Other duties as may be required to support VOALA’s mission and goals.
Essential Duties
  • Screening and Assessment:
    Perform client screening, intake, orientation, and assessment to complete admission to the residential program; screen for continuing stay criteria based on ASAM Criteria.
  • Treatment and Counseling:
    Deliver treatment using trauma-informed approaches and evidence-based practice; provide individual, group, and family therapeutic counseling; advocate for clients when appropriate.
  • Coordination within Team:
    Respond to client crises and emergencies; coordinate treatment services with multidisciplinary Case Management team.
  • Conduct discharge and transition planning; draft discharge summaries.
  • Recordkeeping:
    Provide complete, timely, and accurate documentation of all treatment in Electronic Health Record system and client files, ensuring confidentiality as required by HIPAA.
