Consultant Urologist

We are looking for a Consultant Urologist to join our department as Consultants (currently 9 in total with future expansion planned). We are a well-established Urology Unit in the 3rd Biggest Health board in Scotland, serving a large population area. We have a dynamic, expanding Department of Consultants with all sub specialist interests and we have excellent support from 24‑hour senior middle grade (Including 3 StRs from West of Scotland Training Rotation) and junior middle grade cover.

It’s an excellent opportunity for a newly trained consultant or an established consultant looking for a new challenge.

Our consultants provide a comprehensive breadth of Urological Sub specialist services including Endo‑Urology, Upper tract Laparoscopy, Pelvic Oncology and General Urology. We have started Robotic Pelvic Surgery using Da Vinci Robotic system based in University Hospital Hairmyres and we have invested in other areas like a Thulium laser in addition to 2 existing Holmium Lasers in the department.

The successful candidate is expected to lead on the Benign Prostate Hypertrophy (BPH) Service. They will be encouraged to develop this area and create a new bespoke service for the patients on Lanarkshire. A business case for increased BPH modalities including HOLEP and Rezum is in progress (November 2025). In addition to this we are looking for a motivated individual to re‑design the whole pathway from vetting, out patient review to surgical treatments.

This will align with GIRFT and BAUS principles.

This service will be based in the Urology Hub University Hospital Monklands (UHM). We want to create a one stop service to modernise BPH treatment in NHSL. This will be integral to transition planning for the new Monklanks Hospital (MRP).

The successful candidate will work in NHSL which has 3 acute sites as detailed above. Urology is centralised to University Hospital Monklands. University Hospital Wishaw and Hairmyres provide out patient nurse, medical and diagnositic sessions. On call and inpatient operating will be based at University Hospital Monklands. Occasionally the operating lists may be at the two other sites.

The precise details of the job plan will be dependent on the successful candidate’s subspecialty training and interests. The job is offered as a full‑time post (10 PA, including up to 2 non‑DCC) but applications will be considered from those wishing to work less than full‑time. If full‑time up to 2 EPA’s may be available to undertake additional outpatient and/or procedure sessions or management activity.

Proposals for additional SPA time from applicants are encouraged. In addition to the 1 PA for Non‑DCC/SPA activities, the Board is supportive of applications for additional SPA time from individuals with well‑developed ideas for improving services who are able to demonstrate a commitment to quality improvement, patient safety (including human factors training), Medical Education, Research & Development, acting as an Appraiser, etc.

Applicants who are able to demonstrate a commitment to any of the above or other areas and wishing to commence on more than 1 PA for SPA duties should discuss proposals with the identified Recruitment Lead and/or Service Manager who will consider the request in line with the successful candidate’s professional and service requirements.
