• Process a broad range of specialist and routine laboratory diagnostic investigations in Pathology using a range of scientific measurements and technical procedures on patient samples.
• Provides advice to clinicians and other healthcare staff as to appropriateness of tests and time-scales.
• Responsible for own work and uses specialist training to operate complex equipment and solve problems.
• Acts as a mentor to less experienced Biomedical Scientists and participates in training /supervision of Trainee Biomedical Scientists and Medical Laboratory Assistants.

This post is based in the HPV and Cytology Department within University Hospital Monklands. There is potential to assist in the histology lab and andrology, but this post is primarily cytology based. If the successful candidate does not hold the Certificate of Competence in Cervical Cytology, the post will be an Annex 21 post.

• Adherence to policies and procedures relevant to all areas of work in accordance with Departmental, Directorate, Hospital and regulatory requirements
• Validates and authorises clinical laboratory results, issuing reports/results to service users e.g. clinicians. Recommending further tests/actions when required with referral to more senior staff /Consultant as appropriate.
• Supervision of Trainee Biomedical Scientists and Medical Laboratory Assistants working in that area
• Daily instrument testing, first line maintenance, repair, technical fault finding and performance of quality control on a daily basis for equipment for own use and for other staff to operate.

• State registration with the Health Professions Council is mandatory.
• BSc honours degree in Biomedical Science or equivalent, which is acceptable for Health Professions Council registration.
• Formal evidence of specialist knowledge of a range of discipline specific procedures.
• Evidence of continuing professional development, for example, a specialist portfolio of development, attendance at specialist courses, training on new instrumentation and learning through reflective practice.
