Job Summary
Reporting to the Fire Prevention Officer, the primary responsibility of this position will include public education (85%): delivering Public Fire & Life Safety Education programming throughout the Town of Ajax for all age groups. This role also includes the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of our community-based education programs and functions. Secondary responsibilities will include fire prevention inspections (15%): enforcing fire safety legislation by conducting inspections and reviewing fire safety plans for buildings within the Town of Ajax.
Job Duties Include- Develop and design fire & life safety education programs for the community.
- Deliver fire prevention education programs within the community.
- Monitor effectiveness and relevance of current and new community outreach programs/initiatives and make changes as needed.
- Maintain statistics on AFES public education activities/initiatives relating to public education.
- Work with the Town’s Corporate Communication Division and other approved media outlets to disseminate fire and life safety information in an approved format to residents and businesses of Ajax.
- Maintain multiple social media platforms, corporate website, Platform X, Instagram and Facebook.
- Establish and/or maintain an excellent and productive working relationship with internal customers, external customers, stakeholders and partners.
- Seek out and prepare grant applications.
- Review and maintain public education information on the department web page.
- Maintain inventory of educational materials for all programs and all stations.
- Liaise with the news media to increase public awareness of fire/life safety hazards and plan special events to promote fire/life safety.
- Instruct, guide and coach AFES staff in presentation techniques and lesson plan delivery.
- Conduct fire inspections to enforce fire code compliance with all applicable legislation and standards in consultation with the Fire Prevention Officer.
- Post‑secondary graduation from a university, technical or community college in education, marketing or a fire and life safety educator certification is preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Minimum of two (2) to four (4) years of related experience with demonstrated aptitude in the field of education, marketing, or in fire and life safety education.
- Knowledge of child and adult learning/training theories/methodologies.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Canva) and social media platforms such as X, Instagram and Facebook.
- Knowledge of appropriate regulations and legislation, i.e., Fire Protection and Prevention Act, Ontario Fire Code, etc.
- Successful candidate will be able to communicate courteously and effectively both verbally and written, be productive in a team setting, possess excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and be willing to upgrade education to achieve and maintain professional competency.
- Candidates must have a valid Class “G” driver’s licence in good standing.
- Upon being hired, an ability to work a flexible work schedule including occasional evenings and weekends.

- Second language in French is an asset.
- Experience working with children between ages 3 to 18.
- Experience in delivering Public Fire & Life Safety Education Programs (e.g., all school age programs, Learn Not To Burn, TAPP‑C arson prevention, safety for seniors, etc.).
- A proven ability to promote and stimulate interest and cooperation in fire prevention activities through public speaking, demonstrations, and other methods.
- Knowledge and experience in adult and child education principles and theories.
- Experience in curriculum planning, development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of community‑based education programs and functions.
