Overview

6pm-6am shift covering inpatient pediatric surgery, trauma surgery, ENT, and outpatient burn walk‑ins.

Scope & Responsibilities

Under the supervision of a physician, the Physician Assistant (PA‑C) provides medical care, diagnostic, and therapeutic interventions to patients with complex, acute, and chronic health conditions in a variety of clinical settings. The PA‑C assesses health status, obtains history, performs physical exams, identifies significant risk factors, orders and interprets lab and diagnostic studies, develops diagnoses and treatment plans, and collaborates with nursing, medical, and other healthcare team members.

Inpatient duties include:

  • Provide medical care to patients with complex acute, critical, and chronic health conditions, including delivery of acute care services.
  • Practice with specialty‑based populations such as neonatal, pediatric, and adult patients.
  • Work in settings that require complex monitoring and therapies, high‑intensity medical intervention, or continuous vigilance.
  • Participate in bi‑annual quality monitoring through record and treatment plan review (FPPE and OPPE).

Outpatient duties include:

  • Emphasize health promotion, disease prevention, and the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic health problems.
  • Participate in bi‑annual quality monitoring (FPPE and OPPE).

Additional responsibilities:

  • Identify patient/family needs for discharge (education, equipment, further home care, transportation, referrals).
  • Write prescriptions within scope of practice.
  • Communicate appropriately with the primary care physician.
  • Select and order appropriate tests under physician guidance.
  • Write orders in the patient chart, cosigned by a physician as needed.
  • Participate in emergency treatment and triage appropriately.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all department and patient matters.
  • Communicate with families providing written materials and videos when appropriate.
  • Assist/performs treatments/procedures for patients on the service.
  • Administer medications competently.
Position Specific Competencies

Behavioral Indicators:

  • Evaluate care daily during rounds.
  • Document assessment, plan, care provided, teaching, and discharge planning.
  • Complete Bureau of Worker’s Compensation forms.
  • Monitor and intervene to promote patient safety, notify supervisor, and document events appropriately.
  • Offer expertise to staff and residents, providing reference materials when appropriate.
  • Participate in ongoing education for nurses and physicians through presentations and in‑services.
  • Assist with development of educational materials.
  • Modify practice utilizing current research.
  • Maintain membership in the American Burn Association.
  • Assist in writing/revising policies and procedures for the Burn Center.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies preferred; graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program.
  • Licensed as a Physician Assistant in the State of Ohio with current NCCPA certification.
  • Must have a Supervision Agreement filed, current certificate to practice, and certificate to prescribe (or eligible) by the Ohio Board of Medicine.
  • Credentialed as an active member of the medical staff with appropriate medical staff privileges.
  • Current Health Care Provider BLS training required.
  • Individuals hired without an MS degree or without a certificate to prescribe must actively pursue and obtain a MS degree or certificate to prescribe.
  • Excellent critical thinking, self‑motivation, and interpersonal communication skills essential.
