PositionSummary
The Supplier Development Engineer (SDE) will report to the Division Supplier Development Manager. This is a hands-on role and the SDE will aid in resolving chronic shortages, act as a liaison between the supplier and internal groups, and participate in projects to improve delivery, quality, and cost performance within the Supply Chain to benefit the Braking Systems Division (BSD). The SDE focuses on product and process performance for all production including new programs and current production, connecting Quality, Engineering, Procurement and Supplier.
The SDE will assist in day-to-day project execution and coordination at the supplier and will utilize expertise in Engineering, Purchasing and Operations. Supplier visits and audits will be standard work to ensure continuous improvement of supplier operations and containment of situations that could impact the BSD’s ability to deliver on time to customers.
Knowledge and experience in Purchasing, Design, Manufacturing Operations and quality core tools for zero defects are highly preferred (e.g., Lean manufacturing Techniques, APQP, PFMEA, DFMEA, 8D, SPC, MSA, CP, etc.). The position is based in Akron, Ohio.
Essential Functions- Participate in activities that improve the velocity of transfer of work from an incumbent to a new supplier
- Conduct and review Production Readiness and Risk Assessments (PRA) onsite at the supplier and identify improvement opportunities that help develop the partnership with BSD
- Represent BSD and collaborate with other BSD disciplines to monitor and improve supplier performance (OTD, Zero Defects)
- Bring suppliers online to the Zero Defects Plan (ZDP), including APQP activity and PPAP elements (PFMEA, Control Plan, MSA, PFD)
- Manage and lead supplier continuous improvement proposals
- Assist in the completion of flawless new product introduction
- Recognize supplier performance trends and identify areas for improvement to mitigate risk; contribute to supplier recovery roadmaps as needed
- Travel domestically up to 50% of the time, with some international travel but not frequent
- Bachelor degree in Engineering or related discipline
- Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience; 8+ years preferred; aerospace or automotive industry experience preferred
- Working knowledge of process improvement and zero defect tools (DFMEA, PFMEA, MSA, SPC, PPAP, APQP, Lean Manufacturing, 5S, TAKT, 5
Why, 8D, etc.) - Understanding of manufacturing processes related to planning/scheduling, workflow, bottlenecks, etc.
- Knowledge of Supplier Quality and Supply Chain Improvement; able to implement current Supply Chain techniques
- Highly organized with excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work on cross-functional teams; project management and problem-solving skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- PPAP experience including FAI
- Knowledge of statistical techniques is an advantage
- Working knowledge of aerospace regulations and requirements preferred (automotive standards acceptable)
