About the Opportunity

First Energy is a forward‑thinking electric utility headquartered in Akron, Ohio, with a network of over 24,000 miles of transmission lines and a regulated generating fleet of more than 3,500 megawatts. The Transmission Planning Engineer is responsible for transmission planning functions across First Energy’s transmission and subtransmission systems, studying and planning the safe and reliable operation of lines and substations, and performing studies related to generation and load interconnections.

The engineer will coordinate with operating companies, other utilities, generator owners, the Regional Transmission Organization, and Regional Reliability Organizations, and will support the Operations Center during storms, heavy loading periods, and abnormal system events.

Responsibilities
  • Providing technical support and studies to develop transmission and subtransmission infrastructure projects, plans, and capital budgets to maintain reliability and integrity of the FE system.
  • Performing timely completion of bulk and area transmission systems studies ensuring compliance with NERC, PJM and FE planning criteria.
  • Proposing and economically justifying mitigation projects to address planning criteria deficiencies; preparing operating solutions when projects cannot be implemented promptly.
  • Developing annual capital budgets by requesting cost estimates and preparing presentations for the capital portfolio process.
  • Conducting studies related to the connection of new loads, generators, and merchant transmission projects.
  • Providing support to the Operations Center during severe weather, high loading or abnormal system events, including rapid evaluations of system capability and operational recommendations.
  • Collaborating with industry groups (NERC, RFC, PJM) to meet requirements and promote FE practices.
  • Responding to state and federal commission inquiries and providing technical testimony for regulatory and legal matters.
  • Preparing submissions for compliance related to various planning activities and maintaining department’s planning philosophy, facility connection document, and related procedures.
  • Traveling throughout the FE system and to industry activities as required.
Qualifications
  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited institution (or equivalent); a professional engineer’s license or an advanced degree from an ABET program preferred.
  • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certificate or PE license preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of engineering experience.
  • Proficiency with power‑system analysis software such as PSLF, PSS/E, TARA and related planning tools.
  • Familiarity with PJM, RFC and NERC practices, procedures and requirements in transmission planning.
  • Excellent analytical, reasoning, oral and written communication skills; ability to present information to peers and executive leadership.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team on broad assignments involving data analysis and study preparation.
  • Commitment to First Energy’s standards of conduct and FERC compliance.
  • Must live within a 45‑minute commute to the First Energy service territory.
