Summarizes a position under direct supervision of a Physician or Advanced Practice Provider, assisting in the treatment and management of patients with musculoskeletal injuries, fractures, and other orthopedic conditions. The role involves patient care, applying and removing casts and splints, assisting with diagnostic tests, and educating patients and families about care provided.
Responsibilities- Applies, removes, and adjusts casts and splints; sets up or removes skin traction under supervision.
- Ensures proper fit and comfort of casts/splints, checking for complications such as skin irritation or poor circulation.
- Interprets radiographs to guide proper cast molding and wedging.
- Operates cast removal equipment competently.
- Prepares patients for orthopedic procedures, ensuring comfort and safety.
- Provides instruction on proper cast or brace care to patients and families.
- Places EMR orders for radiographs, cast removal, and brace application, as per provider instructions.
- Documents orthopedic pathways and charging for cast or brace applications.
- Follows sterile techniques for wound care, pin removal, joint injections, suture removal, and skin staple removal.
- Observes patient progress, reports complications or concerns to the Orthopedic Team.
- Educates on post‑procedure care and follow‑up appointments.
- Assists surgeons in procedures, including fracture setting, surgery, and orthotic application.
- Supports orthopedic residents in the ED with ACH protocols and care pathways.
- Organizes ED teams and supplies for closed fracture reductions.
- Manages a variety of traumatic injuries while maintaining calm, reassuring care.
- Routes ED phone calls to residents while explaining situations concisely.
- Sets up complex traction frames for surgical cases.
- Provides care to inpatient floor patients under surgeon guidance.
- Answers patient and family questions, ensuring comfort and support.
- Maintains and cleans orthopedic equipment, ensuring sterilization and readiness.
- Controls inventory, orders, and stocks supplies.
- Rooms patients efficiently, maintains medical records, and documents treatments.
- Adheres to regulations from OSHA, HIPAA, and JACHO.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Basic medical terminology knowledge preferred.
- Excellent patient care and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to follow instructions and work in a healthcare team.
- Strong organizational and time‑management skills in a fast‑paced environment.
- Experience in a healthcare setting, preferably orthopedics.
- Experience working with all organizational levels required.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, or similar).
- EMR experience preferred.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required; completion of an allied health program preferred.
- Certification: NBCOT preferred.
- BLS certification required.
- Minimum 3 years experience.
