Respiratory Therapist

• Provide intensive respiratory care and patient transport into and out of the facility as medically prescribed with minimal supervision
• Evaluate patients and recommend treatment plans
• Explain purpose and procedure of treatments, tests, and equipment to patients and provide necessary education upon discharge
• Conduct physician-prescribed treatments operating various ventilatory equipment, both invasive and non-invasive, as well as various oxygen, aerosol, and nebulizer devices
• Administer prescribed medications, humidification, ventilation, and oxygenation to patients
• Perform chest physiotherapy using various equipment to promote secretion clearance
• Perform suctioning via oropharyngeal, nasal, and tracheal methods
• Perform oximetry and capnography monitoring according to policy
• Conduct routine review of patient chest X-rays to determine need for further evaluation
• Perform 12-Lead EKG and basic arrhythmia recognition
• Perform pulmonary function studies including NIF and VC according to policy
• Assist with respiratory care procedures including bronchoscopy, percutaneous tracheostomies, and chest tube placement
• Perform adequate drainage of chest via PleurX catheter or similar device where applicable
• Perform tracheostomy care including insertion and removal of tracheostomy tubes in both emergent and non-emergent situations
• Perform arterial puncture and determine efficiency of ventilation, monitor, record, and report test results
• Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation according to BLS and ACLS guidelines
• Perform insertion and removal of endotracheal tubes via freehand technique and/or video laryngoscope system
• Perform setup and self-test on all ventilatory equipment and operate, maintain, and monitor mechanical ventilation on various types of equipment
• Assist in facilitating preventative maintenance and repair of equipment as needed
• Record all pertinent information regarding treatments and patient responses on respiratory care records and patient chart
• Communicate with attending and pulmonary physicians regarding the efficiency of therapy administered
• Report all necessary information during walking rounds for shift-to-shift handoff communication
• Maintain accurate respiratory therapy charging including data entry, verification, and correction of errors
