Principal Data Scientist - AI at American Modern Insurance Group

Location:

Hybrid (40-50% in the Amelia, Ohio office); remote candidates considered

Join our Predictive Analytics team as a Principal Data Scientist and lead the development and deployment of AI/ML models to drive business growth, inform strategic initiatives, and enable data-driven decision-making. You will collaborate with senior stakeholders, mentor junior team members, and help establish analytics methodologies and best practices while staying current with AI/ML industry trends.

Purpose: Use data and statistical analysis to drive business decisions and improve results across functional areas.

Roles & Responsibilities
  • Lead development and execution of AI/ML strategy.
  • Develop, deploy, monitor, and maintain predictive models using Python, focusing on AI/ML techniques to drive business outcomes.
  • Utilize expertise in Large Language Models (LLMs) to develop NLP and text-analysis solutions.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify problems and develop data-driven solutions.
  • Work with data engineering teams to design and implement data pipelines and architectures.
  • Prepare predictive analytics analyses and modeling with guidance on complex projects.
  • Develop predictive analytics presentations and present results to customers and management as requested.
  • Contribute to projects yielding actionable insights to improve customer satisfaction, policy growth, retention, and profitability.
  • Complete data preparation and identify anomalies; seek guidance on adjustments.
  • Identify data and operational issues requiring specialized analytics attention, data scrubbing, and modeling techniques.
  • Document assumptions, results, and alternatives; communicate with regulators when needed to support rate filings or modeling practices.
  • Create and maintain modeling best practices with internal and external partners.
  • Explain advanced analytic procedures to non-technical audiences and translate customer requests into solutions.
  • Schedule and prioritize workload; maintain organization; perform technical peer reviews as needed.
  • Maintain strong interpersonal skills and build cross-functional relationships within insurance processes.
Required Technical Skills
  • Expert-level proficiency in Python with Num Py, pandas, and scikit-learn.
  • Experience with R and other programming languages.
  • Deep understanding of AI/ML concepts, including supervised/unsupervised learning, deep learning, and NLP.
  • Experience with Databricks or similar big data platforms is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based platforms such as AWS or Azure is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, and software design patterns.
  • Experience in an agile environment (Scrum/Kanban).
  • Commitment to testing, validation, and continuous improvement of models and workflows.
  • Experience with MLflow for model management, versioning, and deployment.
Skills / Knowledge / Experience
  • Leads a team that completes modeling projects and statistical analysis.
  • Effectively communicates results to business partners to drive decisions.
  • Participates in creating best practices and proposes new techniques.
  • Assists in managing projects and guiding junior team members.
  • Six (6) or more years of data science/predictive analytics in insurance or eight (8+) or more years in another industry.
Education, Certifications & Designations
  • Master’s degree in Business Analytics, Statistics, Computer Science, or related fields as described.
