position description
: the language interpreter is a part‑time employee who works up to 24 hours a week as needed with a daily 30‑minute unpaid lunch. The interpreter is assigned to a school location and is responsible for providing oral and written translations at the building level and district level to ensure parents have understandable information about their child’s education. The interpreter adjusts daily hours to support after‑school or evening parent programs as required.
the interpreter reports to the building principal and is evaluated by the building principal and learning specialist twice a year.
qualifications
- high school diploma or ged required
- oral and written fluency in spanish and english, and ability to type in both languages
- valid ohio driver’s license and reliable transportation required
- experience working with parents, staff, and community in the targeted language and in schools (desired)
- familiarity with technology (desired)
- respect for confidentiality and community trust (desired)
- fluency in more than two languages (desired)
- experience as a language interpreter (desired)
- flexible schedule (desired)
- effective communication skills (desired)
essential functions
- provide written, typed, and oral translations in spanish
- collaborate with parents, teachers, principals, and students to ensure clear communication
- offer accurate oral and written translations
- adjust hours to attend evening and after‑school meetings as needed
- maintain access to a telephone/cellphone as required
- serve as a language liaison between staff and families
- provide language assistance in the school and classroom to support lep students and families
- attend school and district meetings where interpreters are needed
- support in person, via computer, or phone as necessary
- drive between school and district buildings and across the city as needed

physical demands and work environment
the physical demands include seeing, talking, hearing, typing, walking, sitting, driving, standing, kneeling or crouching, handling and carrying objects, and lifting up to 25 pounds. The employee must frequently travel to school sites and must have the mobility to do so.
