Van Driver (Akron) role at Education Alternatives

Overview

Education Alternatives is seeking van drivers for the Bedford location. Van Drivers are paid hourly and are responsible for driving clients on an agency owned vehicle to and from our sites located throughout the greater Akron/Cleveland area and on field trips to various locations. This position is a part-time hourly position, Monday through Friday. Ohio Department of Education Certification training will be provided by Education Alternatives.

Responsibilities
  • Assess incidents, complaints, accidents and/or potential emergency situations for the purpose of resolving or recommending a resolution to the situation
  • Work with clients with emotional and behavioral disabilities and intervene when necessary to ensure order and safety
  • Assist clients and other passengers (e.g., seating, restraints, special equipment) for safe loading and unloading from vehicles
  • Advise clients and other passengers of appropriate behavior to reinforce guidelines and maintain passenger safety
  • Safely transport clients to/from their residence to/from their designated drop off point in a timely manner
  • Inform day treatment personnel and parents of events, policies and/or practices for the purpose of providing clarification of procedures
  • Respond to inquiries from clients, parents, and staff for the purpose of providing necessary information regarding transportation services
  • Maintain assigned vehicles, both interior and exterior, for the purpose of ensuring safety, appearance, and sanitation
  • Fuel assigned vehicle for the purpose of maintaining a safe operating condition
  • Monitor passengers during transit to maintain order and ensure safety
  • Perform first aid as necessary to meet immediate health care needs of passengers
  • Maintain ongoing communication with staff including teachers, building directors, fleet manager, and director of transportation for the purpose of conveying information
  • Prepare documentation (e.g., daily log, incident reports, behavior rating, mileage) for the purpose of providing written support and conveying information
  • Conduct safety checks on van before each departure and submit a daily pre-trip inspection form for the purpose of ensuring safe operation of the vehicle and meeting state requirements
  • Attend all agency trainings, including quarterly in-service trainings, for the purpose of maintaining skills and meeting agency requirements
Qualifications
  • Applicants must be at least 25 years old
  • Must hold a valid Ohio driver's license
  • Must have a good driving record, as determined by the Ohio Department of Education
  • Must be able to pass a pre-service physical and drug test
  • Must not have a criminal background that would disqualify applicant from working with children
  • Adhere to safety practice, administer first aid, apply pertinent policies, regulations and/or laws; operate agency vehicles, fire extinguisher, cell phone, and standard office equipment; prepare and maintain accurate records
  • Read manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and present information to others; analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions; basic vehicle maintenance, first aid, health standards and hazards, cell phone communication, and utilize wheelchairs, tie downs, child safety seats, lifts etc.
  • Be attentive to detail, communicate with diverse groups including school age riders, display tact and courtesy, establish effective working relationships, exercise sound judgments, maintain confidentiality, work as part of a team, and work with constant distractions

Working Conditions:

The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands; occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity.

Generally, the job requires 80% sitting, 10% walking and 10% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
