Position SummaryThe CVD Operator/Heat Treater's job involves operating Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), heat treat, and other high-temperature resistance and induction heated vacuum furnaces, autoclaves, and ovens. These are used in the manufacturing of carbon brakes and related carbon/carbon products. Furnaces may be used for carbonization, pyrolysis, heat treat, CVD, and other heating processes to control the properties of carbon/carbon products.
Job Core Responsibilities- Load and unload carbon products onto trees, diffuser plates, modules, or other similar devices used as platforms, containers, or racks in the furnaces.
- Assemble and disassemble trees, diffuser plates, and modules before and after each process.
- Operate elevators, overhead cranes, mules, and prime movers safely during furnace loading/unloading and maintenance tasks.
- Retrieve and return carbon products or assemblies from holding, staging queues, or storage racks within the furnace areas.
- Clean nitrogen vent ports, furnace flanges, or other components using approved methods, and change vacuum filters and apply vacuum grease as needed.
- Remove and replace carbon black within the furnace before and after processes, including handling used, graphitized carbon black.
- Prepare furnaces and equipment for vacuum operations, activate/deactivate vacuum pumps, and perform leak checks for safe operation.
- Monitor and record temperature, pressure, power, and gas flow metrics; adjust settings to maintain parameters during heating/cooling cycles.
- Operate furnaces properly and notify supervision of any equipment warning signals or malfunctions.
- Use Statistical Process Control (SPC) methods to verify production quality; validation by Inspector (P-1582).
- After training, interpret drawings, sketches, and follow detailed technical instructions and communications.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; vocational training in Mechanics or Electronics preferred.
Experience: 1-2 years in a manufacturing shop environment preferred.
Skills:
- Operate hand tools and machinery.
- Read and interpret safety rules, instructions, policies, and procedures.
- Operate a tow motor.
- Recognize and solve typical work area problems, evaluate solutions.
- Effective communication skills.
- This is a third-shift position; training on first shift (days) for 30 days.
