job overview
install, repair, maintain and replace plumbing and heating fixtures including pipes, duct work and all mechanical pieces of equipment; check and correct air and water flow distribution problems in heating, air conditioning and hot and cold domestic flow water systems. This is skilled work in the installation and repair of plumbing and heating fixtures with the akron public schools.
responsibilities- calculate dimensions and bends required for piping
- check and adjust controls, gauges, and valves to achieve control of flow or pressure
- ensure safety of students
- erect safety barriers
- inspect and maintain facility piping, heating, refrigeration and air conditioning systems water treatment and sewer systems, burners and heaters
- install, bend, cut, thread and cut off piping and shapes for fabricating pipe to particular requirements of the job
- install various types of insulation and pipe covering
- interact with other departments and school personnel when necessary
- maintain accurate and complete records as required
- maintain and improve professional competence
- promote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude and conversation
- remove and dispose of old types of insulation and pipe covering
- start up and shut down equipment in accordance with company safety procedures and osha requirements for machine activation and shutdown
- take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities
- perform skilled work in the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing/heating fixtures and their mechanical components
- repair or rebuild boilers, hot air and hot water heating systems
- repair and maintain air conditioning/air handling equipment, e.g., air compressors, pneumatic lines, actuators and some pneumatic controls
- maintain or repair gas, water and sewage service in all physical plants
- perform work assignments from written and/or oral instructions, including blueprints or sketches
- make contacts with the public with tact and diplomacy
- may be required to supervise employees in a lower job classification
- install new plumbing fixtures
- clean drains and obstructions in waste pipes and re-caulk or repack joints
- maintain water connections, sewer connections and water works systems
- install and maintain refrigeration units and water coolers
- perform minor air conditioner system repair
- maintain swimming pool equipment, e.g., pump filters
- perform general welding and repairing of miscellaneous mechanical equipment in school buildings
- maintain hot water and hot air heating equipment
- repair and replace heating coils in unit ventilators
- install and repair air compressors that supply air for temperature control systems
- keep records of time and materials to be charged to individual jobs
- attend meetings and seminars as required
- develop working procedure for the job, material requirements, scaffolding and other equipment required
- draw up plans and complete estimates for projects
- establish and maintain cooperative professional relationships
- interact in a positive manner with staff, students and parents
- interact with public in official capacity when required
- meet with the advisory committee and implement recommendations
- notify supervisor of potentially dangerous piping systems and corrective action taken or documented
- perform related duties as assigned by the plumbing foreman
- post and keep up-to-date records of piping systems and controls in manual
- prepare public relations materials
- prepare required reports for supervisor
- respond to routine questions and requests in an appropriate manner
- work on long-range tool maintenance and replacement project
- graduation from an accredited high school or g.e.d.
- a minimum of three years paid experience in the plumbing and heating trade including a minimum of one year of paid experience in steam pipe fitting
- state of ohio drivers license
- ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing
- ability to use hand and power tools safely

- ability to read and understand verbal and written instructions, written warnings and labels

- ability to use the tools, machinery and equipment of the trade
this is a classified position.
selection processthe selection process will consist of a competitive examination with credit for education and experience. A passing score must be obtained on the competitive examination in order to receive credit for education and experience.
test weights: competitive examination 70%, education 20%, experience 10%.
