Assistant​/Associate Professor of Food Chemistry​/Analysis

Job Description

The Department of Food Science at United Arab Emirates University invites applications for a full-time Assistant or Associate Professor position in Food Chemistry. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses in food chemistry, food analysis, food biochemistry, and related areas; supervise graduate students; and develop an internationally competitive research program. Candidates should have expertise in food chemistry and advanced food analysis, including the chemistry and functionality of food components, chemical changes during processing and storage, food authenticity, contaminants, ingredient functionality, or product quality.

Experience in food metabolomics is preferable, particularly using LC-MS/MS, GC-MS, HRMS, NMR, chromatography, chemometrics, bioinformatics, or multi-omics approaches. Responsibilities include publishing high-quality research, securing competitive funding, developing academic and industry collaborations, contributing to curriculum development and accreditation, advising students, and participating in departmental and university service. The appointee will also support laboratory safety, analytical quality assurance, research integrity, and the effective use of shared instrumentation.

The successful candidate is expected to collaborate with UAEU researchers, government entities, regulatory bodies, international institutions, and the food industry. The candidate should help translate research findings into practical solutions, innovative products, intellectual property, professional training, policy advice, and other outcomes that benefit the food sector and wider community. The position will contribute to innovation in food security, sustainable food systems, value-added foods, and priorities relevant to the UAE and the wider region.

• A PhD in Food Chemistry, Food Science, Food Analysis, Food Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry applied to food systems, or a closely related field.
• A strong record of scholarly research and publication in reputable peer-reviewed journals, appropriate to career stage and the rank sought.
• Evidence of recent and continuing research productivity and a clearly defined research agenda relevant to food chemistry.
• Demonstrated ability to teach food chemistry, food analysis, or related subjects at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
• Ability to supervise student research and work effectively in multidisciplinary and multicultural academic teams.
• Strong written and oral communication skills in English.

  • Evidence of strong potential to establish an independent, externally funded research program.
• High-quality publications and an active research pipeline appropriate to an early-career academic.
• Demonstrated teaching capability and readiness to supervise graduate research.
• Associate Professor
  • A sustained and internationally recognized record of research achievement and scholarly impact appropriate to the rank.
• Demonstrated success in securing competitive research funding and leading collaborative research projects.
• Successful supervision of postgraduate students and evidence of academic leadership, curriculum contribution, and professional service.

• Experience in food metabolomics is preferable, including targeted or untargeted analysis, metabolite annotation, quality-control strategies, and interpretation of complex datasets.
• Hands-on expertise with one or more advanced analytical platforms relevant to food systems, such as LC-MS/MS, GC-MS, HRMS, NMR, HPLC/UHPLC, spectroscopy, or related technologies.
• Experience with chemometrics, multivariate analysis, bioinformatics, data visualization, or integration of metabolomics with other omics or food-quality data.
• Demonstrated success in obtaining competitive grants, building interdisciplinary or international collaborations, and engaging with industry or government partners.
• Evidence of research translation, innovation, patents, consultancy, method standardization, or other impact beyond academic publication.
• Experience supporting program accreditation, curriculum innovation, laboratory development, or academic quality assurance.
