Role: Lab Technician

Type: Permanent

Department: Academic

Line Manager: Head of Science

Functional Reporting: N/A

Purpose of the role

The Science Technician provides technical assistance to the Science Department to support high-quality science education. Responsibilities include preparation, maintenance and availability of materials, equipment and resources for practical science lessons; supporting teaching staff during practical sessions; ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations; contributing to the efficient running of the department; assisting in demonstrations; managing inventories; and supporting the development of engaging and safe practical learning experiences for students.

Key Responsibilities

Specific Duties

  • Coordinate the use of practical resources and facilities; assist and advise on practical needs of the science curriculum; liaise with teaching staff and support staff outside the department.
  • Prepare resources and assemble apparatus
  • Obtain materials by local purchase
  • Stock taking and recording
  • Provide technical advice to teachers, technicians and pupils/students
  • Carry out risk assessments for technician activities
  • Assist in practical classes and carry out demonstrations

Health & Safety

  • Contribute to the assessment, monitoring and review of health & safety procedures
  • Keep up to date with procedures and CPD
  • Share technical advice and support on health & safety issues
  • Safe treatment and disposal of used materials including hazardous substances
  • Safe storage and accessibility of equipment and materials
  • Disposal of waste materials
  • Check fume cupboards, pressure vessels and first-aid kits; carry out safety checks
  • Organise, store and check the condition of chemicals and equipment
  • Attend department meetings when required

Resource Design and Maintenance

  • Construct and modify apparatus
  • Set up and care for plant and animal collections
  • Prepare standard solutions and purify chemicals

General

  • Attend staff/subject meetings as appropriate
  • Attend Inset training events
  • Complete other tasks commensurate with the post as requested by a Head of Department and SLT
Qualifications and Experience
  • A scientific background with laboratory experience
  • Minimum of Maths and English at grade C or above or equivalent
  • Basic knowledge of First Aid advantageous
  • A degree or HND in a science subject is advantageous but not essential
  • Bachelors Degree from an accredited institution; degree subject on MOE approved list (if applicable)
  • Required teaching certification for Qatar MOEHE (if applicable)
  • Experience in providing demonstrations
  • Good hand-eye coordination and ability to use technical equipment with accuracy
  • Time management skills to work on multiple projects
  • Excellent communication skills to work effectively with colleagues
