JOB DESCRIPTION / JOB SUMMARYThe Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA/L) will assist the Registered Occupational Therapist (OTR) in providing rehabilitation therapy to patients of all ages with temporary or chronic physical and psychosocial disability. This includes purposeful activity such as activities of daily living, manual and creative skills, educational and recreational activities, facilitation techniques, developmental skills and other techniques as needed to improve patient physical function and promote mental adjustment.
PERFORMANCEREQUIREMENTS
- A portion of the patient treatments as delegated by the OTR.
- Safety of the patient while he/she is in the Occupational Therapy Department.
- Organization and proper order of the Occupational Therapy treatment area.
- Transportation of patients to and from the department as needed.
- Maintaining departmental and patient records as delegated and necessary.
- Monitoring the supplies used for physically disabled outpatients.
Bending, stooping, lifting patients and equipment when necessary. Pushing patients in wheelchairs and on stretchers. Adjusting equipment to meet specific patient needs. Being alert and attentive to patients' reactions. Ability to work under pressure and/or stress on occasion.
SPECIAL DEMANDSDesire to work with and for people with temporary and/or chronic mental, physical, or developmental disabilities. Knowledge of medical terminology needed to chart patient progress. Experience in arts and crafts to build strength and promote function. Good common sense and ability to reason. An attitude of firm kindness required. Must maintain confidentiality. Ability to be versatile with varied patients and treatment programs.
EDUCATIONCertified Occupational Therapy Assistant who has completed an accredited curriculum and holds current certification with the American Occupational Therapy Association.
TRAINING, EXPERIENCE, OTHERWhen educational requirements are met, no previous experience is necessary, but desirable. COVID vaccination is recommended; exemption may be considered.
WORK PERFORMEDUnder the direction of the Registered Occupational Therapist, the Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant provides treatment only on written or verbal procedures as prescribed by a medical doctor (MD) or D.O.
PRIMARY DUTIES- Assist in planning therapy programs for all patients.
- In collaboration with or under the supervision of the OTR, evaluate response, measure change and development, and record data as requested.
- Prepare and fit splints for functional and non-functional upper and lower extremities as ordered.
- Determine splinting and media supply needs and report to OTR.
- Assist in in‑service education programs.
- Prepare patient treatment area for therapy session.
