About the role:

We are currently seeking a Longwall Supervisor to join our production team at our Shoal Creek Mine, located in Oakman, Alabama. Shoal Creek Mine is one of the deepest underground coal mines in the United States. Located on the Black Warrior River, this site produces one of the highest qualities of met coal in the United States. With nine-foot-tall workings, a brand-new longwall, and 15+ years of projected coal reserves, Shoal Creek mine is an ideal place to work.

Peabody’s Shoal Creek Mine has a safety-first culture and strives to have zero recordable MSHA injuries/incidents.

Responsibilities:

The responsibility of the Longwall Supervisor is to provide a safe work environment to a crew of employees responsible for the production of coal at the longwall face and/or outby areas, while complying with state and federal regulations, including company policies.

Duties will include:

  • Supervise crew to ensure production goals are being met, including setup of employees, safe work practices, and regulatory compliance.
  • Conduct crew safety and informational sharing meetings to ensure safe practices.
  • Complete daily time records and maintain daily production records.
  • Provide oversight of material delivery to designated work areas; supervise brattice work, setting posts and roof supports, clean up duties, hanging ventilation curtains, and other associated tasks.
  • Work closely with the longwall coordinator and maintenance supervisors in coordinating scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on the equipment.
  • Responsible for teaching new employees the correct longwall mining operations.
  • Foster and maintain respectful relationships with all levels of personnel.
  • Comply with and enforce company policies.

About you:

  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED and 5 years of equivalent longwall experience.
  • 3 - 5 years of supervisory experience and/or crew lead experience. Union supervisory experience is a plus.
  • Must possess an Alabama Mine Foreman Certification.
  • Must have a high level of understanding MSHA Regulations.
  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to utilize Microsoft Office programs.
  • Must be willing to work on any assigned shift and on scheduled weekends.
  • Experience in mine mechanical and maintenance preferred.
  • Experience in implementing longwall automation systems and Bi-directional cutting is a plus.
  • Experience in Success Factors, SAP, and Kronos is a plus.

Physical Requirements - Underground:

  • Must have the ability to stand for prolonged periods of time on uneven, rocky surfaces.
  • Must have the ability to be seated for up to 4 hours to operate equipment or vehicles.
  • Must have the ability to walk for up to 4 hours at a time through different sections of the mine with varying degrees of clearance and headroom.
  • Must have the ability to wear required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other personal protective equipment as required by Company and MSHA.
  • Must have the ability to bend or stoop for a full work period as a result of mine height.
  • Must have the ability to climb up and down stairs/steps and climb on and off equipment and ladders.
  • Must have the ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motions (push, pull, twist, handle), and have rapid reflex movements of the arms and legs as well as good hand to eye coordination.
  • Must have the ability to lift 25 to 50 pounds on a frequent basis and the ability to occasionally lift items weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Must have the ability to work in extreme conditions, including but not limited to changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise, and varying degrees of light and dark.

This is a Safety Sensitive Role. Individuals in safety sensitive roles (i.e., roles where impaired performance could credibly result in fatality or permanently disabling injury) cannot have:

  • an uncontrolled condition which is likely to cause loss of consciousness or ability to control a motor vehicle or other large machinery.
  • an uncontrolled respiratory or cardiac dysfunction likely to interfere with the ability to operate a motor vehicle or other large machinery.
