Sanitation Mechanic – Russell County Commission
The Russell County Sanitation Department, under the direction of the Chief Mechanic, is responsible for maintaining and repairing county vehicles and equipment.
Responsibilities- Work with shop personnel to maintain and repair all types of county vehicles, equipment, and machinery.
- Analyze vehicles and equipment to determine the most cost‑effective method of repair.
- Maintain complete and accurate records of all repairs, both written and computerized.
- Coordinate with the Director, Route Supervisor, and others to determine repair priorities.
- Assign and coordinate shop personnel work according to priorities.
- Determine necessary parts and supplies and follow purchase order procedures.
- Provide information and training to personnel on equipment and vehicle maintenance.
- Keep supervisor and others informed of work progress, problems, and improvement suggestions.
- Attend meetings, workshops, and training sessions to stay current on practices.
- Communicate regularly with others to maximize interdepartmental effectiveness.
- Perform other duties as assigned consistent with the role and function of the position.
Skills and Abilities
- Comprehensive knowledge of hazards and safety precautions in automotive and heavy equipment repair.
- Knowledge of vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair procedures, including electronics, hydraulics, air brakes, drive train, steering, air conditioning, electrical systems, manual and automatic transmissions, gasoline and diesel engines, suspension systems (diesel preferred).
- Knowledge of county and department regulations, policies and procedures.
- Computer skills and use of office equipment.
- Proficient diagnosis, repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
- Proficiency with job‑related tools, equipment and software.
- Excellent communication skills to train mechanics and explain issues to non‑mechanics.
- Leadership, motivation, and supervision of subordinate mechanics.
- Ability to interpret manuals and maintenance reports efficiently.
- Basic mathematical computation accuracy.
- Ability to work outdoors in physically demanding conditions.
- Capacity to perform a wide variety of duties under time‑sensitive deadlines.
- Valid high school diploma.
- Valid driver's license.
- Diesel Certification (preferred).
- Minimum three (3) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and heavy equipment, or equivalent training/education.
- Supervisory experience of other qualified mechanics.
- Compliance with all Russell County policies and procedures.
- Perform any other duties not listed above as directed by the County Commission or the Sanitation Department.

- Ability to lift, sit, stand, bend, crouch, or stoop, and lift light and heavy objects frequently.
