JOB TITLE:
SUBSTITUTE BUS AIDE
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. High school graduate or equivalent (GED) and academic competency in basic skills.
2. Valid Alabama driver’s license.
3. Good physical and emotional health, including ability to lift and restrain students of varying age levels and sizes.
4. Participation in pre-service and in-service bus driver training program.
5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.
- Ensure safety of students by buckling them in their seats and securing wheelchairs before bus starts.
- Keep students seated and under control during transportation.
- Assist students with crossing the street, loading and unloading, at home and at school.
- Escort students to the responsible adult at school and account for students’ personal belongings and messages.
- Assist the bus driver with maintaining an updated file of students assigned to the bus.
- Familiarize self with and use assistance request forms, safety equipment, emergency procedures, bus route and pick-up points, wheelchair lift and locking equipment.
- Deal with emergency physical problems during loading, transporting and unloading.
- Notify school officials of unusual events or behaviors and cooperate with school staff in handling behaviors or physical management as requested.
- Contact and obtain an acceptable substitute when absent; understand and uphold system rules, policies, and procedures.
- Maintain professional relationships with students and other employees and promote good public relations.
- Be regular and punctual in attendance and follow procedures for signing in daily and securing substitutes.
- Perform other transportation-related duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Physical dexterity, coordination, mobility and visual acuity to perform the essential functions of the position.
