Position Overview
The Regional Senior Industrial Hygienist reports to the Regional Manager of the Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Enforcement Branch.
Responsible for performing professional-level senior industrial hygienist work related to health, chemical, physical and biological hazards in workplaces across the state.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct specialized health inspections, accident/illness investigations, and consultations.
- Develop procedures and guidelines for audits, inspections, and investigations.
- Lead, plan, organize, review and direct work of inspection teams on assignments such as Heat, Silica, Asbestos, Fatal health‑related accidents/illnesses, health complaints, and special projects.
- Evaluate work performance of health engineers and prepare training development plans.
- Hold committee meetings to revise or propose new health orders within the Cal/OSHA program.
- Perform in‑service and on‑the‑job training of staff.
- Develop programs promoting industrial hygiene concepts; consult with labor, management and public groups.
- Assist in implementing and maintaining health and safety programs (IIPP, Heat Prevention, Respiratory Protection, Medical Surveillance).
- Assist District Manager in planning, tracking and reviewing workload.
- Provide technical advice to Senior Management.
- Assume District Manager responsibilities when necessary.
- Certificate in the Comprehensive Practice of Industrial Hygiene issued by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene or a Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.
- Extensive experience and knowledge of industrial hygiene principles, practices and methods.
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams and develop training.
- Experience conducting health inspections and investigations.
The position is located at 1515 Clay Street, Ste. 1303, Oakland, CA 94612.
The job involves work in an office environment and at field sites with potential exposures to safety and hazardous substances. Work hours are extended periods at a desk, walking, standing, and traveling by private, state or public transportation, including overnight travel in California.
Physiological requirements include: bending, squatting, kneeling, stooping, twisting, reaching, lifting up to 50 lbs, climbing stairs/ladders, using protective equipment, and handling continuous computer usage.
