Assistant Track/Short Distance/Field Events Coach
Supports the head coach and supervises the overall sports program for the track, short distance, and field events. Provides coaching, mentoring, and administrative support to ensure student‑athletes develop fundamental skills, strategy, and character.
Reports to the Athletic Director and high school principals.
Job GoalInstruct athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for individual and team success, while promoting socially acceptable character development, self-discipline, confidence, and pride of accomplishment.
Qualities & Qualifications- Ability to support the head coach and supervise a total sports program.
- Previous successful coaching experience or participation in the assigned sport.
- Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and continuous learning of new theories.
- Serves as an appropriate role model for student athletes through instruction and actions.
- Have thorough knowledge of all athletic policies approved by the Alamosa Schools' Board of Education and implement them consistently with staff.
- Interpret existing system, state, and league regulations for staff.
- Understand administrative lines of command and refer all requests through proper channels.
- Attend required public, staff, and departmental meetings.
- Establish fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques; organize conferences, clinics, and staff meetings.
- Train and inform staff, encourage professional growth and clinic attendance.
- Delegate duties, supervise implementation, evaluate effectiveness at season’s end.
- Maintain discipline, address grievances, and enhance morale and cooperation.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the athletic director or principal.
- Assist the athletic director in scheduling, transportation, and requirements for tournaments and special sport events.
- Prepare for scheduled sport events or practices, adhere to facility times, and coordinate with maintenance and school employees.
- Provide documents to satisfy state and system requirements for physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
- Safeguard and manage equipment; advise the director on policy or procedural changes.
- Serve as a mentor promoting character traits such as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
- Monitor student athletes' grades and conduct.
- Provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards during practices, games, and travel.
- Disseminate training rules and sport‑specific regulations to athletes.
- Initiate programs related to injuries, medical attention, and emergencies.
- Complete injury paperwork and submit required forms within 24 hours.
- Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
- Determine discipline, follow due process, and communicate with parents regarding dropped or ineligible students.
- Assist athletes with college or advanced educational selection.
- Participate in budgeting with the athletic director; establish requirements for the next season and adhere to budget appropriations.
- Account for all equipment; collect costs for lost or unreturned items.
- Manage issuance, storage, and reconditioning of equipment; submit inventory records annually.
- Mark and identify equipment before issuing or storing.
- Monitor equipment rooms and coach offices; authorize access for requisitions.
- Ensure athletes use only authorized areas at appropriate times.
- Examine locker rooms pre‑ and post‑practice and keep facilities clean; maintain specific sport equipment cleanliness.
- Secure all doors, lights, windows, and locks when custodians are not on duty.
- Instill respect for equipment and school property in each player.
- Organize parents, coaches, players, and guests for preseason meetings.
- Promote the sport within the school through recruitment and outside the school via media, little league programs, etc.
- Ensure quality, effectiveness, and validity of any oral or written release to local media.
- Maintain good public relations with media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
- Present information to media concerning schedules, tournaments, and results.
