Job SummaryThe Professional Advisor II promotes a positive and successful learning experience for students to increase retention, success, and completion. The advisor facilitates advising and registration, ensures students are connected with support services and activities, disseminates program information, and tracks student performance. They collaborate with stakeholders across campus, remain current on academic policies, and attend trainings and meetings. The position may require occasional evening, weekend, and extended hours during peak academic periods.
Responsibilities- Serve as the first point of contact for questions and concerns for assigned students.
- Monitor and track the retention, progression, and graduation of all students within assigned population using advising software.
- Develop success plans that provide goals for academic performance, major exploration, and student engagement.
- Advocate for students in areas related to success, pace, and graduation.
- Stay informed of university policies, procedures, programs, and course maps, and attend scheduled department and advising center meetings.
- Represent the academic advising unit on college and university committees.
- Utilize university technologies, software, and processes for academic advising and participate in ongoing training.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
- Master’s degree from an accredited institution in a related field with one (1) year of related work experience.
- OR Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with five (5) years of related work experience.
- Demonstrated commitment to academic advising evidenced by prior experiences, letters of recommendation, and interview(s).
- Demonstrates all required knowledge, skills, and abilities of a Professional Advisor Level I, including the ability to function autonomously as an advisor for assigned caseloads.
- Knowledge of institutional academic policies, student resources, and support services.
- Experience with advising software such as Banner, EAB Navigate, and Degree Works.
- 3-5 years of experience in academic advising or a similar role within higher education.
- Effectively explains exceptions or details related to degree requirements, policies, procedures, and student-facing technologies.
- Reflects student concerns and interests back to the student, showing holistic understanding.
- Provides tailored support & challenge to individual students depending on their situations.
- Uses expertise and creativity to engage students in conversations, eliciting concerns and leading them through problem‑solving or decision‑making processes.
- Effectively intervenes or makes specific referrals based on individual student situations, needs, or interests.
- Coaches students in activities that ensure academic success and applies advising best practices, theories, and technologies.
- Explains degree requirements, policies, and procedures to groups of students using presentations.
- Creates effective messaging and identifies timelines for communicating advising topics and technologies and proactively initiates outreach.
- Demonstrates skillful professionalism in communications and handles challenging conversations.
- Implements best practices when using communication technology.
- Adapts structure of advising session depending on students' needs.
- Effectively manages time and calendar to ensure accessibility.
