PositionThe purpose of this classification is to operate light equipment and perform manual work functions associated with construction, repair and maintenance of Electrical Power, distribution systems, substations, generators, telecommunications systems, lines and related equipment. This is the progressive working/training position to becoming a qualified Line Worker.
Responsibilities- Operate a variety of equipment, machinery and tools used in construction, maintenance and repair of power distribution systems, including dump trucks, backhoes, trencher, line trucks, boring rigs, tension rigs, hydraulic tools, jackhammer, air compressor, pipe horn, etc.
- Perform routine general maintenance tasks to keep machinery and tools operable, such as inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing, washing, and cleaning shop and work areas.
- Maintain right‑of‑ways, ditches and holding ponds, trimming trees, removing stumps and debris, mowing grass, and other related tasks.
- Assist with substation maintenance and construction of power distribution systems, laying and installing pipe, boring under roads, pouring concrete, digging trenches, driving ground rods, flagging traffic, and lifting heavy materials.
- Assist in operating, managing and maintaining Utility and privately owned generators.
- Install, maintain and repair underground and overhead structures such as high‑mast lighting, street lights, poles, cables and related equipment.
- Work after normal business hours, weekends and holidays as required during natural disasters, power outages, tree work or other service disruptions.
- Assist in installing transformers, insulators, lightning arresters, switches, wire conductors and auxiliary equipment to poles.
- Operate a two‑way radio during duties.
- Load and unload equipment and materials; maintain sufficient supplies on trucks for work sites.
- Use precautionary work methods and safety equipment to protect crew and public.
- Respond to routine requests for information from employees, officials, the public or other individuals.
- Install, maintain and remove decorations and lights during holiday seasons.
- Assist with manual tasks associated with the installation and maintenance of the Fiber Optic telecommunications system.
- Participate in the Accredited Apprentice Lineman Training program, including out‑of‑town travel, climbing wood poles, completing homework and classroom assignments, and written and hands‑on testing.
- Progress through training levels, ultimately qualifying to work low voltage without supervision and medium to high voltage under direct supervision by the third year.
- Maintain self‑motivation and discipline, follow strict safety rules, national, state and local codes and specifications.
- Complete CPR, GDOT Flagging, Pole Top & Bucket Truck Rescue training and certifications.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- May be temporarily assigned to tree crew, directional drilling crew, substation or any other light department crew as needed.
- High school diploma or GED required; supplemented by 6–12 months of previous experience or training operating light equipment, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements, or be able to obtain within a six‑month orientation period.
