Position Overview

The Lunch Monitor plays a critical role in maintaining a safe, positive, and orderly environment during lunch and recess periods. The position is responsible for supervising students, promoting respectful behavior, and supporting the smooth flow of lunchtime and recess operations. This role ensures that all students enjoy a safe, clean, and supportive environment consistent with KIPP Capital Region's values and expectations.

Duties/Responsibilities

Student Supervision

  • Supervise students during lunch and recess to ensure safety, appropriate behavior, and adherence to school rules.
  • De‑escalate conflicts calmly and fairly, promoting positive student interactions.
  • Ensure that students remain in designated areas and transition to and from lunch in an orderly manner.

Safety and Order

  • Maintain a safe and structured environment by managing student movement and behavior throughout the cafeteria and playground.
  • Report significant issues, such as injuries, unsafe behavior, or equipment concerns, to the Director of Operations or the designated administrator immediately.
  • Uphold all school safety and emergency procedures.

Cleanup and Sanitation

  • Assist with cafeteria cleanup, including wiping tables, sweeping floors, collecting trays, and emptying trash or recycling.
  • Support custodial staff in maintaining a clean and sanitary lunchroom environment.

Student Assistance

  • Assist younger students with opening containers, cleaning spills, or navigating the lunch line.
  • Encourage positive habits such as cleaning up after meals and using respectful language and behavior.

Communication and Collaboration

  • Communicate promptly and professionally with teachers, administrators, and operations staff.
  • Model courteous, professional, and inclusive behavior in all interactions with students and colleagues.
  • Participate in staff meetings or trainings as requested to align with school‑wide expectations and procedures.

KIPP Capital Region

  • Perform other duties outlined by classroom teachers, the School Nurse, and the Director of Operations.
  • Complies with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations, including those of the NYS Department of Education, Department of Health, and NYS Office of Children and Family Services.
  • Adheres to organization policies and procedures; promotes and supports mission, vision, and values, including developing and participating in internal surveys and data collection for continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • The ability to work during school lunch time (11:15 am‑2:15 pm) Monday‑Thursday required.
  • Preferred experience working directly with students, preferably required in the charter, private, or public school environment.
  • Prior experience working in schools and urban communities is preferred but not required.
  • Aptitude to create and work within an inclusive environment that honors and supports a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives.
