Position SummaryThe role is an Electrical Engineer responsible for designing LV, HV, EHV electrical power systems with emphasis on substation engineering design for transmission and distribution systems. The Engineer leads a team of engineers and drafters for substation engineering design projects, including detailed electrical and physical design for high voltage substation projects.
Key Responsibilities- Practical knowledge of engineering, procurement, and construction projects.
- Coordinate project flow and issues among all engineering disciplines and project management.
- Provide engineering support to project management, procurement, and construction at all stages.
- Lead multi-discipline engineering team to execute engineering and design of substation/transmission projects efficiently.
- Develop single-line switching and protection diagrams.
- Create equipment specifications and support procurement of equipment, including working with vendors and reviewing vendor/contractor-proposed equipment.
- Develop three-line and DC schematic diagrams.
- Maintain bill of material.
- Develop cable and conduit schedule, including sizing.
- Conduct required calculations and create reports for AC and DC systems, including sizing DC battery, overvoltage protection and coordination, conduit fill, grounding, lightning protection, etc.
- Develop control panel layouts and wiring diagrams; select protective devices and ratings.
- Review and coordinate substation physical drawings and calculations, including general arrangements, clearances, details, conduit, grounding, lightning protection, etc.
- Design underground MV and HV cabling systems, including cable ampacity, installation details, etc.
- Coordinate design with clients, vendors, and subcontractors, including attending meetings.
- Ensure all engineering documents and records are properly maintained.
- Coordinate with purchasing and quality control personnel.
- Coordinate and guide designers/drafters and detailed review/approval of electrical drawings.
- Understand unique requirements and constraints of multiple project types, including engineering-only, EPC, utility, renewable, industrial, commercial, etc.
- 5+ Years’ experience in Design of Transmission Level Substations (13.8kV – 500 kV), including transmission line protection, substation protection and control systems, generator, transformer and bus protection schemes, development of station/substation single-line, protection, control and SCADA diagrams, equipment specifications, designs and layouts, capacitor banks and distribution feeder protection.
- Demonstrated experience at all interfaces of transmission level projects.
- Minimum 3 years of application experience with SEL, GE, etc. relays.
- Strong knowledge of NEC, NFPA, NESC, OSHA, NERC, RUS, IEEE, ANSI, IEC, and local and federal building codes.
- Familiarity with, and review of, substation physical drawings and calculations.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
- Ability to work well with others in a team setting.
- Professional Engineering license in one or more US states.
- Experience with SEL, GE, etc. relay programming.
- Experience with SCADA and low-voltage auxiliary systems.
- Professional Engineering license (one or more US states) preferable but not required.
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering and/or Electrical Power Engineering.
- Educational courses in power systems analysis, electrical machinery, etc.
- Knowledge of NEC, ANSI, NEMA, IEEE and other applicable codes and standards.
- Microsoft Word – Intermediate
- Microsoft Excel – Intermediate
- AutoCAD (2015 or later) – Intermediate
- Microsoft Outlook – Intermediate
- Project Engineers’ travel level is typically 10%.
- Ability to lift / move equipment up to 15 lbs.
