Job DescriptionJOB SUMMARY
NY Creates is seeking a skilled and motivated Failure Analysis Technician to support our advanced 300mm semiconductor development operations. This role focuses on the offline characterization and analysis of semiconductor structures and devices using advanced instrumentation such as SEM, FIB, and TEM. The successful candidate will play a key role in identifying defects, supporting root‑cause investigations, and contributing to process improvement initiatives.
This position requires hands‑on expertise in analytical techniques, strong communication skills, and the ability to collaborate with cross‑functional teams in a fast‑paced R&D environment.
Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Operate and maintain advanced analytical tools, including Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM), Focused Ion Beam (FIB) systems, Transmission Electron Microscopes (TEM), and other laboratory equipment.
- Perform physical and electrical failure analysis on silicon wafers, semiconductor packages, and components.
- Conduct sample preparation techniques such as delayering, cross‑sectioning, and TEM lamella fabrication using FIB.
- Execute SEM imaging, FIB milling, and TEM sample preparation to support internal teams and customer requests.
- Analyze and interpret data to determine root causes of defects and performance issues.
- Prepare comprehensive reports documenting analytical findings, failure mechanisms, and recommended corrective actions.
- Collaborate with engineers and researchers to define analysis strategies and communicate effectively.
- Identify and implement improvements to analytical methods, sample preparation techniques, and lab workflow efficiency.
- Develop and optimize new sample prep procedures (e.g., wet etch, plasma etch) to expand lab capabilities.
- Work with the Metrology, FA, and Test Manager to identify training and development opportunities aligned with departmental goals.
- Maintain up‑to‑date training certifications and participate in performance evaluations and program planning.
- Other reasonable duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
- Associate’s degree in engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a related technical discipline from a college or university accredited by the USDOE or an internationally recognized accrediting organization, OR equivalent experience with 10+ years in semiconductor manufacturing, R&D, or failure analysis.
- Fundamental understanding of semiconductor devices, materials, process flows, and IC design.
- Hands‑on experience in a failure analysis lab environment with exposure to SEM/FIB/TEM techniques.
- Proficiency in sample preparation, imaging, and defect analysis.
- Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills with attention to detail.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, for technical reporting and cross‑functional collaboration.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and general computer literacy.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and adapt to a dynamic environment.
- Willingness to work evening or off‑shifts as needed.
- Commitment to laboratory safety and cleanroom protocols.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or a related field from an accredited institution.
- 6+ years of experience in semiconductor failure analysis or analytical lab settings.
- Proficiency with Dual‑Beam FIB systems, high‑resolution SEM, and advanced TEM tools.
- Prior experience supporting process integration or device development teams.
- Familiarity with advanced failure analysis methodologies and root‑cause analysis frameworks.
