Summary of Role
The Home Equity Lending Specialist processes and underwrites home equity loan applications submitted by members through various channels. Ensures outstanding member experience and high‑quality loan decisions that meet the credit union’s lending policies. The Specialist communicates regularly with members via phone and email, employing a proactive service approach and takes ownership of applications until they are cleared to close. The Specialist champions the use of digital loan processing solutions.
Responsibilities- Successful completion of Lender training and NMLS registration.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of all regulations that govern home equity lending, including the issuance of required disclosures.
- Process and underwrite home equity loan applications placed by members through all channels.
- Conduct an in‑depth review of property value determinations, credit reports, title reports, and related documentation to ensure sound lending decisions.
- Evalue member borrowing history and underwrite the loan request in accordance with Credit Union Lending policy, determining risk and ability to repay the loan in full.
- Accurately review all income documentation such as tax returns, pay‑stubs, and W‑2s to analyze an applicant’s ability to repay.
- Communicate directly with members regarding their loan applications through phone, email, and LOS web messaging.
- Manage an application pipeline that includes new and existing applications to ensure timely turnaround.
- Use a proactive service delivery approach to maximize each member interaction, setting expectations for the remainder of the loan process.
- Render accurate loan decisions consistently in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Review approved loans for items such as stipulation completion, rate & term handling, document collection and identity verification, and system notation.
- Consult with members and recommend products and services that meet member needs, such as payment protection.
- Demonstrate proficiency in technical applications including Loan Origination System, Intranet, Internet, and core systems.
- Provide quality service to members and assist internal customers with questions or problems related to the home equity loan programs.
- Utilize personal and telephone interviewing techniques to discuss loan alternatives and eliciting positive responses.
- Attend all job‑related training, departmental staff meetings, and external training provided by the credit union.
- Support annual strategic goals and consistently achieve assigned individual and team goals.
- Review and analyze credit reports with members, offering financial counseling and maintaining knowledge of the current lending environment.
- Champion the use of digital loan processing solutions, including the online/mobile loan application, Mobile Application Center, and Docu Sign.
- Provide recommendations for efficiencies and new ideas to meet goals.
- Demonstrate strong problem‑resolution skills by conducting research and solving problems independently.
- Assist other areas of Retail Lending as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma and a minimum of one year of experience in a related field.
- Prior experience in underwriting, processing, real‑estate secured or consumer loans; experience at a financial institution preferred.
- Proficiency in financial analysis, credit report review, underwriting, and supporting documentation review.
- Ability to identify red flags in loan scenarios and supporting documentation.
- Prior experience in customer service, specifically cross‑selling within a financial services environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel and loan origination system.
- Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
- Ability to prioritize work; self‑motivated with enthusiasm for working independently in a team environment.
- Eligibility for MLO registration on the National Mortgage Licensing System (NMLS) is required.
- Skilled in handling member service issues, including service recovery.
Starting Compensation: $22.62–$27.15/hr, plus a competitive benefits package.
