Job Description :
The Rockefeller Institute of Government, as the public policy research arm of the State University of New York, conducts cutting-edge research and analysis on a range of public policy issues at the federal, state, and local level. In 2018, the Institute expanded its policy portfolio with the creation of the Regional Gun Violence Research Consortium (RGVRC), a coalition of over 140 gun violence researchers and practitioners from across the United States that seeks to inform policymakers and the public by providing evidence-based, data-driven policy recommendations to disrupt the cycle of firearm-involved homicides, suicides, and injuries.
A postdoctoral research fellow, who will work in-person in the Albany, NY Institute office, will support the RGVRC on existing and new sponsored research projects, as well as expanding the specific in-house subject matter expertise on firearm violence-related issues and policies. The fellow will be responsible for identifying relevant existing data sets or building new data sets; conducting quantitative, qualitative, and/or mixed methods analyses;
meeting with collaborators and relevant stakeholders; and assisting in the writing and presentation of papers, blogs, and other research output.
The postdoctoral research fellow will work with the RGVRC executive director, RGVRC staff, consortium members, and other team members at the Rockefeller Institute of Government, as well as outside stakeholders including policymakers, agencies, and the public-at-large. The position is a maximum two-year term, contingent upon the availability of funding.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities Include (But Are Not Limited To):
- Data analysis for Consortium- and Institute-generated or sponsored projects.
- Writing and communicating findings to sponsors, peers, and the public.
- Development and execution of one's own research agenda, including designing new research studies, collecting original data and/or identifying appropriate secondary data sources, and conducting the appropriate analyses to answer corresponding research questions, under supervision of Consortium and Institute leadership.
- Identifying and procuring essential data sets for policy analysis.
- Analyzing policy issues.
- Building professional relationships and interacting with staff in federal, state, and local government agencies as well as with private-sector organizations and other researchers.
- Communicating effectively, including superior writing skills.
Job Requirements :
- The candidate must have a terminal degree (e.g., PhD or equivalent). Candidates who are ABD may apply, but a terminal degree must be awarded prior to their start date. The candidate must have completed coursework in quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods for social science research in a relevant field (including criminology, criminal justice, sociology, public health, psychology, public policy, epidemiology, or political science).
- Advanced data analysis capabilities.
- Experience with data management / analysis software such as SPSS, R, or STATA.
- Strong organization and critical thinking skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications Include
- Experience with GIS.
- Experience with data visualization, including use of Tableau or similar software.
- Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. VISA sponsorship is not available for this position.
- Salary is dependent on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, experience, education, training, and certifications. The range for this position is $73,000-$85,000 annually.
- The state title for this position is Postdoctoral Associate (SL-1) and is part of the United University Professions Union.
- This is a temporary position for up to 24 months.
