Job Specifics Duties Description :
The Nathan S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research (NKI) is a dedicated research facility of the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) located on the grounds of Rockland Psychiatric Center in Orangeburg, NY. NKI is affiliated with the New York University Langone Medical Center (NYULMC), located in midtown Manhattan. Applications are currently being invited for a full-time Research Scientist 4.The

Center for Biomedical Imaging and Neuromodulation (C-BIN) at the Nathan Kline Institute is looking for an experienced MRI Technologist to join our research imaging team. You would run our research-dedicated 3T scanner day to day, work directly with the scientists who design the studies, and help keep our participants safe and comfortable.

What the work is like

This is a research setting, not a clinical one. There is no throughput target and no reading queue. Sessions are scheduled with time built in for setup and for the participant. The people you scan are volunteers who have chosen to take part in a study, and many come back for repeat visits over months or years. Most of the schedule is weekdays during regular hours.

Some studies need an occasional evening or weekend session, and we plan those well ahead of time.

You would work alongside faculty, postdocs, students, and research coordinators. They rely on your judgment about how to get a clean scan, and they are happy to explain the science behind a protocol. Our team is small, collaborative, and respectful of each other's expertise.

Who we are looking forA technologist who is confident on the console, careful about safety, and curious about how imaging works. You do not need a research background to start here. If you have solid clinical MR experience and want more time per participant, more variety in protocols, and the chance to learn advanced techniques (fMRI, diffusion, spectroscopy, quantitative imaging), this could be a good fit.

We will train you on our protocols and research procedures. As you settle in, there is room to grow into protocol development, QA leadership, and training others.

What you would do Scanning and participant care
• Run brain MRI sessions for research participants, including healthy volunteers, children, older adults, and patients.
• Screen participants for MR safety, position them well, and keep them comfortable and informed throughout the session.
• Set up and check coils, task equipment, and physiological monitoring before each scan.
• Follow study protocols and help research teams put new ones into practice.

Working with the research teams
• Help investigators refine imaging sequences and study-specific protocols.
• Offer practical input on imaging parameters, scheduling, and what it takes to get high-quality data.
• Troubleshoot imaging problems and explain the technical side to researchers in plain language.

Equipment and new technology
