Construction Safety Advisor (Albany, OR)

Overview: The Construction Safety Advisor is responsible for promoting and maintaining a safe working environment on all construction projects. This role provides expert guidance to site management and workers on safety practices, ensures compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, and fosters a proactive safety culture. The Safety Advisor acts as a resource for identifying hazards, mitigating risks, and ensuring that all safety programs and policies are effectively implemented.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Safety Compliance and Oversight

  • Monitor construction activities to ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, and other applicable regulations, as well as company safety policies.
  • Conduct regular site inspections and audits to identify unsafe conditions, practices, or equipment.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of site-specific safety plans and procedures.
  • Ensure all subcontractors and vendors comply with project safety requirements.

Training and Awareness

  • Deliver safety orientations and toolbox talks for employees, subcontractors, and visitors.
  • Provide ongoing training to promote hazard recognition and safe work practices.
  • Coach and mentor workers and supervisors to enhance safety performance and accountability.
  • Investigate incidents, accidents, and near-misses to determine root causes.
  • Prepare detailed incident reports and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Support return-to-work and corrective action processes following incidents.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, audits, training, and incident reports.
  • Generate and submit required safety performance reports to management and clients.
  • Track leading and lagging indicators to measure safety performance.

Collaboration and Support

  • Work closely with project managers, foremen, and crews to integrate safety into daily operations.
  • Participate in pre-task planning and job hazard analysis (JHA) reviews.
  • Act as a liaison between field staff and corporate safety leadership.
  • Provide guidance on personal protective equipment (PPE) selection, use, and care.
  • Identify opportunities to improve safety systems, processes, and culture.
  • Stay current on industry safety trends, best practices, and regulatory updates.
  • Support company-wide safety initiatives and contribute to long-term safety goals.

Measures of Success

  • Field presence:
    Provides visible and accessible safety leadership, with hazards identified and addressed before they escalate.
  • Training and coaching impact:
    Workforce demonstrates safe work practices as a result of orientations, toolbox talks, and ongoing field coaching.
  • Corrective action follow-through:
    Safety issues identified in audits, inspections, or incident investigations are resolved in a timely and effective manner.
  • Engagement:
    Employees and supervisors actively participate in pre-task planning, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and other proactive safety processes.
  • Performance indicators:
    Contributes to positive trends in leading safety metrics and helps reduce the recurrence of incidents and near misses.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, or related field (preferred) or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of safety experience in construction, industrial construction, field operations or similar settings.
  • OSHA 30-hour Construction certification (required).
  • Knowledge of mechanical contracting and heavy industrial construction, including power, steel, chemical and energy sectors.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local construction safety regulations.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively on active construction sites.
  • Previous experience as a Safety Advisor, Coordinator, or similar role in construction.

Travel Requirement: This position requires travel to and from jobsites and extended overnight stays are expected.

Physical Requirements: Will frequently sit, use of hands/fingers, talk/hear. Will frequently stand, walk, grasp, reach w/ hands/arms, bend/stoop/kneel/squat/crawl. Lift up to 30lbs. Near vision. Ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment: Will frequently be in an office. For the most part, ambient room temperatures, lighting and traditional office equipment as found in typical office environment. Will frequently be on a job or shop site. Moderate noise level. Employees must use personal protective equipment as deemed necessary by the industry/construction safety standards and/or by McCarl’s safety policy and procedures.
