Supervises and participates in the operations work at the City Landfill. Supervises and participates in the operation of heavy equipment at the landfill. The employee ensures compliance with various environmental regulations related to a lined landfill such as grade, cover depth, water penetration and runoff, and related issues. The employee is also assigned work tasks, trains employees, and ensures proper maintenance, repairs and adjustments to landfill equipment.
Work is subject to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions including extreme heat, cold and noise. Work at the landfill also involves exposure to physical conditions such as moving mechanical parts; atmospheric conditions such as odors and dust; and skin exposure to oils. Work may be subject to OSHA’s blood borne pathogen standards. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Solid Waste Manager and evaluated in progress and upon completion for adherence to standards.
- Graduation from high school, considerable experience with heavy equipment operation, and some experience with landfill operations and supervision; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training
- Possession of a valid North Carolina commercial driver's license.
- Obtaining Solid Waste Association of America Landfill Operations certification will be required.
- Must be able to perform basic life functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, grasping, pushing, pulling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
- Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Must have visual acuity to operate heavy equipment and distinguish types of materials being deposited in the landfill.
