Electrician/ Electrician Installation, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Performs responsible technical work assisting in the construction, maintenance and repair of underground and overhead lines in the electrical distribution system.
Performs technical work in the installation, maintenance and repair of underground and overhead electrical distribution lines. Work is differentiated from advanced and senior level crew members by the less skilled phases of electrical distribution work. The employee also operates various trucks and equipment such as line trucks, cable trucks, trenchers, track hoes, and bucket trucks. The employee works closely with the Electric Underground Crew Leader to repair, splice and maintain electric underground distribution lines, transformers and services.
The employee, excavates trenches, installs conduit, pulls cable, and connects cable to meter base. The employee is expected to perform basic line tech level work, while on call and, on occasion, perform skilled electrical distribution work under supervision of the Electric Underground Crew Leader. The employee applies standardized techniques and safety standards in daily work operation. Work requires on‑call responsibilities for one week in a stand‑by rotation and call‑back responsibilities.
The employee is subject to hazards associated with electrical work including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme temperatures, and exposure to various hazards such as working at heights, loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, confined spaces, poor ventilation, and oils. Work is performed under supervision of the Electric Underground Crew Leader and is evaluated through periodic conferences, observation of results achieved, and is reviewed in progress and upon completion for conformance to instructions and accepted standards.
- Graduation from high school supplemented by technical training in electrical principles and some experience in a skilled trade, preferably electrical; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Possession of a valid North Carolina commercial driver's license.
- Possession of or ability to obtain certification as a graduate of Basic Climbing school, Basic Lineman school, Basic Underground School, Basic Metering school, Substation school, Transformer school and Electric Safety certification as required by the City.
- Training in Basic First Aid and AED use and Arc Flash Safety.
- Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
- Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Must possess the visual acuity to operate mobile equipment, monitor work site progress, perform skilled electrical tasks, and inspect and assemble small parts.
