Highway Shop

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs repairs and maintenance on vehicles transmissions, brakes, hydraulic systems, ignition systems, exhaust systems, drive train components and electrical operations ensuring that all work is performed in compliance with Federal and State safety regulations.
  • Prioritizes vehicle repairs and determines when outside contracting services are necessary to perform repairs.
  • Cuts, welds and fabricates metal alloys. Operates equipment such as cutting torches, welders, plasma cutters, drill presses and metal lathes; determining the size and type of materials necessary to perform repairs and identifying the type of joining process to use.
  • Tests, analyzes and inspects repairs performed on County equipment by operating various diagnostic equipment.
  • Plans and implements preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Assists in the preparation of bid specifications for additional or replacement equipment.
  • Provides emergency field assistance to disabled equipment including determining the urgency of the repair; coordinating the transportation of equipment to the repair shop; and arranging for equipment replacements for field employees as necessary.
  • Consults with vendors to ensure timely receipt of supplies and equipment including placing orders, preparing purchase orders, resolving shipping and order receipt problems, and informing vendors of any special supply needs or shipping requests.
  • Places utility locate requests via the MN Gopher State one call system.
  • Performs computer data entry.
  • Available on-call outside of normal work schedule as needed.
  • Attends training, educational and staff meetings as assigned.
  • On call 24/7.

While these are the primary focus of the position, we believe strongly in teamwork and employees will be called upon to perform a variety of duties as part of their role with the County.

Position Requirements Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of and skill in proper and safe maintenance and repair of heavy equipment and internal combustion engines.
  • Knowledge of maintenance of drive trains and cooling, hydraulic, electrical brake and fuel systems.
  • Knowledge of Freeborn County purchasing policies.
  • Knowledge of metal joining techniques.
  • Knowledge of State and Federal regulations pertaining to the safe operation and maintenance of heavy equipment.
  • Skill in using a wide variety of hand, power and mechanics tools.
  • Skill in welding and operation of high-pressure boilers.
  • Skill in conducting safety inspections.
  • Familiarity with OSHA and relevant Department of Labor laws and requirements.
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret a variety of instructions and work specifications furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to maintain accurate files and records.
  • Ability to use computers and software.
  • Ability to respond to calls for service outside of normal work schedule.
  • Ability to perform a variety of typical assignments under limited supervision with general autonomy in determining how objectives are achieved. Supervisor generally sets operating benchmarks, goals and objectives within standard operating procedures.
  • Ability to apply a variety of procedures and policies using moderate analytical ability in adapting standard methods to fit facts and conditions, using generally prescribed procedures.
  • Ability to communicate and maintain relationships with department staff, other departments, contractors, vendors, etc. to relay detailed or technical information or facts.
Education and Experience
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Two years of specialized or technical training in electrical engineering, engine repair or related field
  • One to three years of relevant work experience
  • Or equivalent combination of education, training and experience
Licenses/Certifications
  • Minnesota Commercial Driver’s License
  • DOT Inspections Training
  • MSHA Training
  • Forklift Certification
  • Safe Assure Training
  • Road Safety Awareness Training

  • Office equipment and technology
