Open Rank Lecturer - Navajo Language Instruction
Join a team of motivated, dedicated individuals working to promote, teach, and study the Navajo language at the University of New Mexico. The Navajo Language Program, part of the Department of Linguistics, seeks a full‑time, 9‑month appointment – Open Rank Lecturer (I, II, or III) – to begin August 10, 2026.
Eligibility:
The position is one of UNM’s open rank faculty appointments for a 9‑month, full‑time contract. Applicants must hold a B.A. in Diné Studies, Education, Native American Studies, Linguistics, or a closely related field by the date of appointment and have three (or more) years teaching Navajo at the post‑secondary level.

The Lecturer should have experience teaching the Navajo language and the capacity to incorporate cultural knowledge to enhance classroom instruction. The Lecturer will learn UNM’s online platform for web‑enhanced instruction, assist with program recruitment, promotion, and advising, and complete assigned administrative duties timely. Depending on specialty and program needs, teaching graduate level Navajo courses is possible. The candidate should be prepared to improve Navajo language curriculum, document classroom instruction, and contribute to advanced Navajo course development.
Minimum Qualifications- B.A. in Diné Studies, Education, Native American Studies, Linguistics or related field by date of appointment.
- Three (or more) years of experience teaching Navajo in post‑secondary settings.
- Five (or more) years of experience teaching Navajo language courses.
- Experience and/or training in developing and teaching online courses and working with Learning Management Systems.
- Experience incorporating Navajo culture into Navajo language pedagogy.
- Ability to work effectively with students and colleagues.
- Demonstrated commitment to cultivating an understanding of the rich cultures of New Mexico and supporting UNM’s mission to serve local and global communities.
