Student Advanced Level Reading Tutor Position Summary

Location: Various Sites in Albuquerque

Job Description

The reading tutor will primarily work with pre‑literacy children, typically 3rd grade and under, enhancing reading and comprehension skills. The tutor may provide one‑on‑one or group sessions depending on Global Give‑A‑Book’s events.

The tutor will read books to children; after each session, children can take a book home. The tutor must motivate children to read and keep them comfortable throughout the sessions.

Responsibilities include:

• Implement a small‑group early literacy curriculum.
• Read to children in settings of ten or more.
• Maintain the attention of small children.
• Develop literacy instruction for children preparing for elementary education.
• Work with disadvantaged children whose reading is below grade level.
• Tutor content and grammar for various assignments.
• Provide instruction to children with English as a second language (ESL).
• Provide intensive literacy instruction to students identified as having low literacy barriers.

Enrolled in a degree‑seeking program at UNM, enrolled at least half‑time (6 hours) during fall and spring semesters. Work‑Study applicants must meet satisfactory academic progress.

• Enthusiastic and energetic.
• Read out loud with a strong, loud voice.
• Able to keep a child’s attention.
• Available for weekend events.
• Must hold a Work‑Study Award.
