Position Summary

Assistant Professor of Art and Foundations Area Coordinator. Probationary appointment leading to a tenure decision. 1.0 FTE.

The Department of Art at The University of New Mexico is seeking an interdisciplinary studio artist whose practice is complementary to our broad undergraduate and graduate programs, encompassing Art & Ecology, Ceramics, Experimental Art & Technology, Painting & Drawing, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture.

The ideal candidate will be conversant in both practice and as an instructor in contemporary art, including material studies, theory, technology, and aesthetics.

The new faculty member will serve as the Art Foundations lead faculty and area coordinator, and as the Department of Art Undergraduate Advisor. They will demonstrate excellence in teaching and mentorship within a department that values close faculty-student engagement.

As the Art Foundations lead, they will support both undergraduate and graduate students as an advisor, mentor, and instructor. This includes mentoring graduate student Teaching Assistants in Art Foundations courses and contributing to undergraduate admissions portfolio reviews.

The Foundations Area Coordinator will also serve as an Undergraduate Advisor, working in collaboration with the College of Fine Arts Advisement Office.

We seek a colleague who will join us in our commitment to cultivating an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university’s mission to serve local and global communities.

The teaching load is one Art Foundations course per semester (1/1), along with overseeing all Art Foundations courses and instructors, managing adjuncts, Teaching Assistants and work‑study students, overseeing the budget including purchasing supplies, and organizing the classroom spaces.

This faculty member will also be expected to serve on advanced undergraduate and graduate student thesis committees. Concurrent service, ongoing research, and creative scholarship will be expected.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MFA or equivalent in Studio Art or related field (by time of appointment)
  • Two years of post-graduate cumulative university-level experience as instructor of record

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated interest in contributing to a contemporary interdisciplinary art studio setting in an atmosphere of close faculty-student mentoring.
  • Proven active exhibition and publishing record.
  • Demonstrated expertise in contemporary art foundations, interdisciplinary studio art, critical theory, technology and aesthetics.
  • Five or more years of experience in university-level teaching or institutional equivalent.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide teaching and studio art mentorship to undergraduates and graduate students.
  • Proven experience coordinating a studio art learning space, supervising graduate teaching assistants and work‑study students, and managing budgets.
