Resilience Innovation Fellows

Resilience Innovation Fellows: funding opportunity for graduate students

Resilience Innovation Fellows is a cohort program for GRFP Honorable Mention students at the University of New Mexico. Students from eight STEM departments will participate in professional development and training opportunities connected to the ARID Institute (Accelerating Resilience Innovations in Drylands) at UNM as a supplement to their disciplinary research. Cohort programming will introduce fellows to local communities, expand their access to research resources, and provide professional development opportunities linked to resilience research, careers, and employment.

Funding

amount

Selected fellows will receive a stipend of $37,000/year for three years, with an educational allowance (for tuition/fees/expenses) of $16,000/year.

Fellows may use this funding over a five-year span; NSF does not require that the funded years be consecutive.

Eligibility
  • Named a GRFP Honorable Mention no more than 3 calendar years prior to the EGFP Fellowship application (e.g. For 2025 applicants must have been named as a GRFP HM no earlier than Fall 2022). GRFP HM status is subject to verification by NSF.
  • U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or permanent residents of the United States
  • Intending to enroll or enrolled full-time at UNM in one of these departments:
Biology, Civil & Environmental Engineering, Chemical and Biological Engineering, Earth & Planetary Sciences, Economics, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Geography & Environmental Studies, Physics & Astronomy,
  • Never having previously accepted an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship or EGF.
To apply

To apply, potential applicants must use NSF’s ETAP system. (UNM opportunities are listed by field; please ensure you select the opportunity associated with your field of study.)

The application requires a short statement of career goals and a resume/cv upload.

Timeline

The application portal is now open; applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible to be considered.

Please note:

Students who already have funding for fall 2025 or for the full 2025-26 academic year can still apply.

We will work with fellowship awardees to manage NSF funding on a schedule that does not disrupt teaching assignments or other professional opportunities.
