What Your Job Will Be LikeWe are seeking a Facilities Engineering Project Manager with cost estimating experience to join a core team that will develop an in‑house estimating capability for individual projects ranging from $500 K to less than $34 M, with an annual total of approximately $200 M. Once established, the successful candidate will provide internal cost estimates to our Project Execution team.
- Use estimating expertise and technical knowledge to produce accurate construction cost estimates.
- Work closely with project execution staff to identify technical and non‑technical risks and opportunities during the project execution phase.
- Contribute value engineering proposals to reduce project cost.
- Develop and maintain a cost estimate database to house previous estimates and measure performance; improve estimating processes and ensure accuracy from external estimating support vendors.
- Assemble and present cost estimating performance metrics in professional presentations.
- Communicate with other laboratories and industry to benchmark and enhance Sandia’s estimating capabilities.
- This position has no direct reports.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range$99,400 – $193,600
* Salary range is estimated; final salary will be determined based on selected candidate’s experience and qualifications.
Qualifications We Require- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, construction management, or related field, plus five (5) years or more of directly related experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this job.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience performing construction cost estimating as your primary occupation.
- Professional estimating certification:
Certified Cost Professional (CCP) from the Association for the Advancement of Cost Engineering International (AACEI) or Associate Estimating Professional (AEP) from the American Society of Professional Cost Estimators (ASPE). - Experience with standard project cost management practices, including:
- Cost estimating project plan development.
- Evaluation of cost estimating.
- Evaluation of external market factors and risk applicability to project cost factors.
- Risk and opportunity management.
- Ability to obtain and maintain an active DOE Q‑level security clearance.
- Certified Estimating Professional (CEP) from AACEI or Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) from ASPE, existing or obtained within 2 years of employment.
- Experience leading a team of professional construction cost estimators.
- Knowledge and background in one or more engineering fields (mechanical, electrical, civil, structural, architecture, or related technical field).
- Experience working with construction cost estimating software.
- Ability to develop corporate estimating standards and procedures aligned with industry recommended practices, DOE Orders, and prime contract requirements.
- Knowledge of management practices, assurance processes, business operations, fiscal and scheduling systems, and project acquisition standards.
- Team‑building skills, including effective collaboration with other organizations, project sponsors, customers, and suppliers.
- Organizational skills, enabling effective prioritization and completion of tasks in a high‑pressure environment.
