Cleared R&D Mechanical Engineer – Light Initiated High Explosives (Onsite)
Sandia National Laboratories is seeking a highly versatile R&D Mechanical Engineer to support daily operations and projects within the Light Initiated High Explosives (LIHE) facility.
What Your Job Will Be Like- Support the daily operations of projects within the LIHE facility
- Assist in research for environmental testing using Light Initiated High Explosives
- Design, integrate, and implement equipment and process solutions to overcome technical problems
- Operate and maintain lab equipment including robotic sprayers, remote manipulators, high‑voltage capacitor banks and diagnostic tools
- Design equipment and fixtures using modeling software such as Solid Works
- Assist with projects and experiments based on PI direction
- Document designs, experiments, and processes
- Develop and document work plans, operating procedures, security plans, waste treatment documentation packages, and other compliance activities
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range$99,400 – $193,600
Qualifications We Require- BS degree in a relevant discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development
- Active DOE Q clearance or equivalent required to start
- Graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or a highly related field with an independent research project requirement
- Experience with mechanical engineering and product realization in the NNSA complex
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams
- Evidence of good academic performance
- Familiarity with explosives testing and laboratory environments
- Experience with robotic systems, X‑ray diagnostics, mechanical/electrical systems design, fabrication, and testing
- Developing processes, technical documents and procedures
- Operating high‑speed photometrics equipment (Photron preferred)
- Experience with LabVIEW or MATLAB; proficiency in Solid Works
- Ability to document work and processes
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Willingness to qualify as an explosive operator and work with high‑explosive materials

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or an equivalent active clearance with another U.S. government agency. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and must maintain the clearance throughout employment.
