Position Overview and Duties
  • Perform design, review, and oversight services for fire protection and life safety systems.
  • Conduct a detailed review of design and shop drawings and recommend acceptance testing of building and site fire protection systems being constructed.
  • Review major studies, scopes of work, preliminary and final design plans, and specifications prepared in‑house or by Architect‑Engineer (A‑E) firms to ensure technical accuracy of all portions relative to the fire protection specialization.
  • Evaluate submittals provided by contractors and A‑E firms for compliance with federal accessibility, building, and fire codes.
  • Review contractor‑prepared test plans and participate in acceptance testing of fire protection systems.
  • Develop original plans, design analyses, and specifications for fire protection, fire detection, mass notification, and life safety features of design work accomplished in‑house.
  • Provide detailed design analysis reports in accordance with UFC 3‑600‑01, Design for Fire Protection Engineering for Facilities, for designs prepared in‑house and review reports developed by A‑E firms.
  • Serve as a mentor to other Fire Protection Engineers in the district, division, and other governmental entities as needed.
Minimum Education Requirement

Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in engineering. The program must: (1) lead to a bachelor’s degree (or higher) in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET); or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses more advanced than first‑year physics and chemistry in five of the following seven areas: statics, dynamics;

strength of materials (stress–strain relationships); fluid mechanics, hydraulics; thermodynamics; electrical fields and circuits; nature and properties of materials; and any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics (e.g., optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, electronics).

Minimum Experience Requirement

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS‑12 grade level in the Federal service, which includes reviewing fire alarm and mass notification system shop drawings for contract and code compliance; analyzing electrical engineering (power, lighting, and telecommunication) plans, specifications, and construction submittals for technical accuracy; and performing construction inspections to include acceptance testing and commissioning of fire protection systems.

  • All positions require the applicant to be a citizen of the United States.

  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 25% of the time.
  • Incumbent must possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver’s License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • Professional Engineer:
    The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess and maintain a license/registration as a Professional Engineer in good standing, issued by any one of the 50 states or its territories.
  • Hiring incentives such as recruitment/relocation bonus, service credit for leave, and student loan repayment may be authorized (subject to available budget).
  • Relocation (PCS) expenses may be authorized (subject to available budget) if the selecting official determines the relocation is in the best interests of the government.
