Overview of the United States Attorney's Office - District of New Mexico

The U.S. Attorney's Office (USAO) for the District of New Mexico is one of 94 USAOs in the nation.

But our office is unique. New Mexico is home to 23 tribes and pueblos, 4 military bases, and 2 national labs. New Mexico is the fifth biggest state of the union in size, shares a border with Mexico, and is a major international and economic corridor. The USAO is primarily responsible for prosecuting federal crime occurring in the District of New Mexico.

The USAO partners with tribal, state, county, city, and foreign governments to ensure our communities are safe and prosperous.

Duties of Budget Technician

As a Budget Technician, duties include (but are not limited to):
  • Reviews and analyzes budget reports, classifies errors and takes corrective action to balance errors.
  • Determines that all transactions are properly processed and that total activity agrees with pre-determined control totals.
  • Analyzes and prepares recurring and special reports on the causes of adjustment actions, determines the source of processing deficiencies and recommends corrective procedures.
  • Participates with supervisor or budget analyst in the preparation of budget activities and estimates.
  • Identifies actual or potential problem areas, trends, significant deficiencies and areas of imbalance.
  • Makes recommendations or takes corrective action to resolve issues within established program guidance and USAO policy.
  • Reviews, analyzes, classifies and reconciles transactions and commitment and obligation documents.
  • Initiates and completes all correspondence necessary to resolve discrepancies in fiscal transactions with vendors and/or commercial firms.
  • Prepares invoices and other fiscal items for payment.
  • Verifies amounts with original obligation documents.
  • Continually reviews the utilization of funds, funds availability and overall budgetary processes of the USAO.
  • Regularly reconciles accounts and adjusts them to reflect outstanding balances.
  • Takes independent actions to determine if all entries are accurate and investigates mistakes, determining the corrective actions required.
  • Researches all erroneous data.
  • Collects raw information and data and assembles it into tabulated or summary-type forms to be used in the formulation and execution of financial management activities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • You must be a United States Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation
  • You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
  • If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
  • You must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement.
Qualifications

GS-6: To be eligible at the GS-6 level, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level in Federal service.

Specialized

Experience:

One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level in Federal Service. Specialized experience is defined as experience assisting higher level budget officers/analyst in monitoring a unit's operating budget; preparing routine payments, running recurring reports, and inputting data into an automated financial management system; reviewing documents with financial implications to ensure they are accurate and complete; preparing travel forms and assisting staff with use of automated travel system.

GS-7: To be eligible at the GS-7 level, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 level in Federal service.
