Patient Service Coordinator - Patient Access, Scheduling at UNM Medical Group, Inc.
Full‑time position located in the Cancer Center Scheduling Area of the University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC).
Minimum Salary: $36,399 – Midpoint $44,754 (based on years of total relevant experience).
SummaryUnder limited supervision, performs a wide variety of administrative support functions at the assigned UNMMG Ambulatory Clinic, including but not limited to direct service to patients either by phone or in person through scheduling appointments, receptionist duties, verifying demographic and insurance information, obtaining referrals and prior authorizations with insurance carriers, and serving as a liaison with physicians, other providers, and insurance companies.
Dutiesand Responsibilities
- Responsibly handle all scheduling needs for Cancer Center patients, including processing observation orders, lab and diagnostics, and queuing clinical staff for triage.
- Perform clinic receptionist duties: answer incoming phones, patient check‑in/out, coordinate and facilitate accurate patient appointment scheduling through electronic and/or manual systems, schedule follow‑up appointments as ordered by providers, update and ensure accurate patient schedules in UNMMG computer systems.
- Registration duties: obtain a copy of the insurance card, verify accuracy of patient demographics and insurance information, and update the UNMMG computer systems.
- Financial / Cash Management: collect co‑pays and upfront payments, generate receipts, refer patients to financial counseling if needed, and perform daily cash reconciliation following UNMMG policies.
- Billing: generate charge documents, complete provider documentation, select DX and CPT codes, and submit to UNMMG charge entry.
- Prior Authorization: coordinate and process all referrals and prior authorizations, interface with insurance companies to verify coverage and obtain authorizations, compile necessary documentation, and update computer systems.
- Maintain ongoing communication with the centralized UNMMG Practice Coordinator regarding staffing, training, and clinic front‑end operations.
- Maintain record‑keeping and filing systems; gather, enter, and update data as required.
- Provide backup support for other administrative personnel; cross‑train with other staff.
Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED. Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that exceed the minimum education requirements may be substituted for experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
- Verification of education and licensure (if applicable) required if selected for hire.
