Programmer Analyst 2

The New Mexico Tumor Registry (NMTR) is a population‑based cancer registry that has served New Mexico since 1966. The NMTR gathers, maintains, analyzes, and disseminates cancer surveillance data and supports scientific investigations of cancer. The NMTR is a division of the Cancer Control and Population Sciences Program at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC). The NMTR is a founding member of the National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program and has been continuously funded by the SEER Program since 1973.

Data collected by NMTR is routinely used to document and track trends in cancer occurrence and care, support scientific research, and inform public health policy.

The NMTR is seeking a skilled Programmer Analyst who, under limited supervision, will provide professional level support in areas of moderately advanced complexity such as system analysis and design techniques to analyze and evaluate business objectives, implement and maintain custom and commercial applications and system integrations, and provide database and programming‑related support to NMTR faculty and staff. Under the general direction of senior leadership, this position will analyze applications;

apply upgrades; and develop and maintain documentation. The position will also write, test, and troubleshoot code of moderately advanced complexity for review by senior level technical staff, and provide technical guidance on implementing and maintaining applications.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop intermediate to advanced programming code to extract data from existing sources for custom reports and required data submissions.
  • Prepare data for data linkages and in response to data requests.
  • Administer receipt, distribution, and processing of electronic data files and documents.
  • Work with external entities to set up and maintain secure data exchanges that are formatted consistently.
  • Develop, implement and maintain applications or systems of moderately advanced complexity, including (but not limited to) SEER
    * DMS and related programs, electronic pathology cancer reporting systems, and database management using SAS, SQL, or other appropriate programming language.
  • Apply and troubleshoot vendor‑supplied upgrades and integrate or interface multiple applications, such as systems supplied by the NCI or CDC for cancer surveillance, electronic pathology reporting systems, and other database management applications.
  • Under supervision, analyze business objectives and develop solutions for problems of moderately advanced complexity, specifically those relevant to cancer informatics.
  • Under supervision, evaluate and test new or modified software programs and software development procedures to verify program function according to user requirements and conform to established guidelines and best practices. Complete custom application modifications to enhance functionality; create and update documentation for applications and provide training to users on new or changed processes; contribute to the establishment of technical standards.
  • Research issues, analyze potential solutions, compare alternatives in terms of cost, time, and availability of resources, and recommend a course of action.
  • Handle end‑user identity management, user audits, and first‑line phone and email support as well as troubleshooting issues related to application setup, access, software behavior and performance. Develop processes and protocols to track support feedback, follow‑up, end‑user notifications.
  • Analyze data for quality, develop and run queries and reports, and solve data and procedural problems.
  • Maintain current knowledge of relevant technology, programming skills, hardware, and applications, specifically technology and applications relevant to cancer surveillance and cancer informatics. Participate in professional development activities as appropriate.
  • Perform miscellaneous job‑related duties as assigned.

The initial term date will be until 04/30/2026, with one‑year term extensions possible after that.
