Position Summary The University of New Mexico Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) and Office of the Chief Information Officer (CIO) seek an Information Technology Officer (ITO) to coordinate IT services for OVPR, Category 3 Research Centers and Institutes, and campus-wide initiatives. The ITO will manage research-facing IT resources, provide strategic guidance, and advocate for research community needs.
Responsibilities- Represent research community IT needs on technology committees and in the specification, development, and deployment of IT services.
- Provide strategic insights into research cybersecurity, data management, and data sharing, and align with federal regulatory compliance.
- Serve as the point of contact for major IT-related initiatives within UNM and affiliates.
- Develop and manage a shared services model for IT personnel in OVPR units and RCIs to ensure effective coverage of IT needs.
- Advanced knowledge of strategic information requirements and approaches of a major research university.
- Knowledge of current trends in IT, especially research cybersecurity, data management, and data sharing.
- Familiarity with federal, state, and regulatory compliance issues related to research and research IT.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; effective teamwork in a diverse community.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills for presentation to small and large groups.
- Experience with developing and leading technical training and education programs.
- Leadership, strategic planning, and personnel management in a matrixed organizational structure with distributed locations.
- Strategic guidance and counsel to the OVPR executive committee on existing and proposed IT systems that impact research at UNM.
- Development of structured internal and external RFPs and evaluation of proposals in cutting-edge IT services for research.
- Maintenance of confidentiality.
- Serve as principal IT liaison with senior administration, faculty, staff, and students in OVPR, operational units, and Category 3 RCIs.
- Direct, coordinate, and participate in local implementation of University IT operations, projects, and programs, aligning services with OVPR needs.
- Advocate for and lead development of new IT services in support of research; elicit requirements, advise on best practices, manage service development and deployment, and create service level agreements.
- Develop and manage a model for shared IT services within OVPR units and RCIs; provide supervision, mentoring, and technical leadership to this group; maintain essential IT operations.
- Participate in and maintain regular cybersecurity assessments within OVPR units and centers.
- Lead development of new IT services in support of research; create service level agreements.
- Maintain currency of knowledge with respect to state‑of‑the‑art technology relevant to the research enterprise at UNM.
- Support identified enterprise research software systems (e.g., Info Ready, Qualtrics, Huron) and research processes; develop reporting, metrics, and interface with other units.
- Collaborate on creation, education, and production of training materials on cybersecurity, data management and sharing, compliance needs, and other IT aspects.
- Prepare reports, briefings, presentations, and responses on strategic planning issues related to IT issues.
- Review vendor contracts and coordinate IT purchases to ensure effective deployment of solutions aligned with research and research support staff needs.
- Participate in development of IT Service Catalog offerings, Service Level Agreements, and Operating Level Agreements consistent with organizational needs.
- Participate as member of IT management team in planning, problem resolution, and reviewing department performance.
- May recommend and participate in development of university policies and procedures; may serve on university planning and policy‑making committees.
- Perform miscellaneous job‑related duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree; at least five years of progressively responsible work experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
