Overview
Deputy Medical Investigator. The Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI) investigates deaths that are sudden, violent, untimely, unexpected, or where the cause of death is unknown in the state of New Mexico. OMI determines the cause and manner of death and provides formal death certification. This position supports OMI by responding to death scenes and conducting investigations in collaboration with law enforcement.
Responsibilities- Respond to death scenes, including natural, suicide, accidental, homicide, or undetermined cases.
- Examine decedents, conduct on-scene investigations with law enforcement, photograph the scene, and secure decedents for transport.
- Testify in court when required and work extended hours in sensitive situations involving families, funeral homes, law enforcement, and peers.
- Drive company vehicles and physically move and maneuver decedents in various conditions and surfaces; ability to handle amounts over 300 lbs may be required.
- Maintain compliance with policy, procedures, and all applicable laws; achieve and maintain ABMDI certification within one year of employment.
- Work on 2nd and 3rd shifts, with 10-hour shifts; schedule is unionized and determined by bid; may include holidays and weekends.
- Associate’s degree in a related field; at least 1 year of directly related experience.
- Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution and/or experience directly related to duties may be interchangeable on a year-for-year basis.
- Bilingual
- Experience in the death industry or as a first responder.
- Possession of a valid New Mexico driver’s license or ability to secure and maintain one.
- May be required to submit immunization records for required vaccines and TB testing; UNM may provide hepatitis vaccination or accept prior vaccination records.
- Pre-employment physical examination and medical history check; pre-employment background investigation required; must maintain certification status.
- All regular, non-temporary positions in this classification are represented by a labor union and are subject to the US-UNM Collective Bargaining Agreement.
- Must achieve Registry level certification with the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigations (ABMDI) within one year of employment.
- Employees in patient care or clinical areas must comply with the University influenza vaccination requirement.
